Martin O'Neill resigns

Villa are screwed

Most of the names in the running appear to support that:

7/2 Slaven Bilic
7/2 Alan Curbishley
6/1 Sven Goran Eriksson
15/2 Dave Jones
10/1 Alex McLeish
10/1 Steve Clarke
10/1 Bob Bradley
14/1 Gary Megson
14/1 Ottmar Hitzfeld
18/1 Phil Brown
20/1 David O'Leary
20/1 Billy Davies
20/1 Simon Grayson
20/1 Ian Holloway

Massive step backwards if they go for someone like Curbishley, Jones or Clarke. Sven seems to be the pick of the bunch there.

As for Martin, I think he'll take a few months off, bide his time and go back to Parkhead...

Who knows for sure but I've heard he wasn't going to get the money from the transfers to reinvest in the squad. Seems unlikely but could understand him quitting in that scenario

Why though, they are just recouping some of the money he's spunked over the years. The following all cost £3.5m+:

Downing
Dunne
Collins
Delph
Davies
Sidwell
L.Young
Cuellar
Harewood
Milner
Petrov
A.Young
Reo-Coker
Carew (swap for Baros who was a £5m player)
Heskey
Knight

So that's 16 players costing £3.5m or more, he bought a lot players and yes most of them were reasonable players not overly expensive who helped them build up a good squad it doesn't change the fact that the board will have pumped in more £££££ than they have recouped.

Celtic fans must be hoping he'll go back there if they get the cash from the McGeady sale to Spartak Moscow? Would probably make Lennon's job even more difficult for this season in any case.

I'd go with Slaven Bilic. Decent coach. His stats (according to wikipedia) are:

Hajduk Split (Nov. 2001 to May 2002) Pld: 17 W:11 D:4 L:2 W% = 64.7%
Croatia U21 (Aug 2004 to Aug 2006) Pld: 18 W: 10 D:2 L:6 W% = 55.55%
Croatia (Aug 2006 to Present) Pld: 38 W 27 D:7 L: 4 W% = 71.05%

Great record for a young manager.

I don't think these 3 did. Heskey was £3m, Knight was £2m IIRC. Young may have been, but I can't really remember.

Young was ~£5m, wasn't he? And Baros (swap for Carew) cost £6.5m. O'Neill spent a lot more money that people realised and other that Barry and now Milner, he's brought in very little in return.

Doubt this has anything to do with the Milner transfer, reckon there's something going on behind the scenes about Ashley Young.

Wouldn't be surprised at all. Like G|mp said in the transfer thread, Milner leaving has been on the cards for ages and O'Neill appeared to have accepted it. Losing Young though would have certainly been the final straw.

I was actually talking with a Spud mate of mine earlier today (before the O'Neill news came out) and he was saying that there's been some suggestion that Young told O'Neill over the weekend that he wants to join Spurs.

Heskey was £3.5m
Knight was £3.5m
L.Young was £5m
Harewood who was starred for some reason was £4m

Whoops, didn't even realise I'd marked him.

The fact is we made an entire squad there. Most of those players are regular first-teamers. I don't get why people pick on the fact we've spent blah blah on x amount of players. We've bought a lot of players in his time, yes, but it's not bad business. Most football teams aren't going to recoup money spent in a short period of time, and we're one of them.

Feel sorry for him, trying to build up a team then it gets ripped apart, hes one of the last few decent mangers in the game.

Would be the ideal replacement for Ferguson at Man Utd if he retires at the end of the season. Can't really see anyone else other than him or Moyes.
