Marussia car crashed during testing

Justin Wilson and Will Power had back injuries (fractured vertebrae in Power's case) in Indycar and recovered to race competitively as well. In fact Power was quicker if anything, 3 wins from the first 4 races this year.

Update from Spanish media, de Villota had a skull fracture, and a total of three surgeries. Marussia confirmed that she was testing an aero package for Silverstone.

Maria de Villota is undergoing surgery after fracturing her skull in Tuesday's accident, Spanish motor racing federation chief Carlos Gracia said on Wednesday.

And the British newspaper the Mirror said doctors are battling to save the sight in one of the Marussia test driver's eyes, after her helmeted head took the brunt of the impact into the side of a lorry loading ramp at the Duxford airfield.

But Graeme Lowdon, the Marussia team's chief executive, is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport as saying the situation "looks a bit better" for de Villota than it did early on Tuesday.

"We are currently waiting for news about how the operation is going, and then we'll see what part of or if the brain is affected," high-ranking Spanish FIA official Gracia told Spanish radio Cadena Ser.

"I would like to believe that Maria is no longer in danger, but only the doctors can judge that and there are so many conflicting reports -- as we know, these things take on a life of their own," he added.

I think if anything, the facial/head injuries from this accident will probably outweigh any spinal damage. From the looks of the incident, her head/helmet has stopped the car against the edge of the truck loading ramp, with the ramp possibly penetrating through the visor opening. The ramp being at the height of the cockpit edge (appears to have slid along the nose up to the driver) would imply its struck her at eye/nose level (unless she turned her head).

Really horrible freak accident.

Obviously this is going to be covered in the TV broadcasts this weekend, but I just hope to god that EJ doesn't make some stupid highly insensitive or inappropriate comment. He likes to have an opinion on everything, but this is one of those times when he needs to just keep quiet.

We all look forward to SEEING her back in the paddock?

Can actually imagine him coming out with something like that!

Terrible news. Really wanna know why the tail lift was left halfway up though.

I was thinking more along the lines of a woman drivers rant.
