Marvel films viewing order?

I'm on Disney+ so should have access to all of the films.

I've heard about watching Star Wars films in the order that they were released and also watching them in "hacked" orders.

Is there a special order for the Marvel films? Bear in mind that I watched Guardians of the Galaxy last week and that's the only Marvel I've seen so far. The obvious next film for me would be the sequel, Guardians 2. Then where to go on from there. The Guardians films are about the orb / infinity stone, and apparently there are 5 of them which may be in some of the other films outside of Guardians 1/2. So that's something to consider.

My Google-"fu" is getting me lots of answers but thought I'd ask the Box Office gurus here :-)

  • Captain America: The First Avenger (takes place during WWII)
  • Captain Marvel (takes place in 1995)
  • Iron Man (takes place in 2010)
  • Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man)
  • The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
  • Thor (takes place six months before Avengers)
  • The Avengers (takes place in 2012)
  • Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after The Avengers)
  • Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (takes place in 2015)
  • Ant-Man (takes place in 2015)
  • Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War)
  • Doctor Strange (takes place in 2016)
  • Black Panther (takes place in 2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (takes place in 2017)
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp (ambiguous, but fits nicely between IW and Endgame)
  • Avengers: Endgame (starts in 2017, finishes in 2022)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (eight months post-Endgame)

This is the order I watched them in with small human, and was a good choice as it was easier to follow the story for him. We also watched all the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series in the correct locations as well.

I'd watch them in release order. Watching Captain Marvel 2nd just because it happens in the 90s before most of the others is bonkers. :/

Always release order because when they made them, they made allowances of the previous film that just came out and then build in Easter eggs or references to it. Also the end credits preview is for the next film or later on, if you watch it in chronological order they may not apply at all.

Someone at work watched Star Wars in chronological order and ruined the whole Vader reveal for herself.

I'm about halfway through watching them in chronological order with the missus. I have seen them all before when they came out but the story does seem to flow well watching them in chronological order.

It's not hard to appreciate the fact they weren't even sure how many films would end up being made, considering how comic book film flops there were before they started along this path. Captain Marvel would have never been made before the success of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America yet it fits in the story much better when watched in the chronological order.

Thanks fellas :)

I'm only 1 film down (Guardians), so I'll probably go for release order from the beginning like @Shamikebab / @marc2003 said.

Unlucky there @Raymond Lin about your workmate's Dath Vader spoiler! I never thought about that aspect, so I think watching Star Wars in the hacked / chronological order would only be for those who already know and seen Star Wars first time round.

Release order, only do chronological if you've seen the films before.

I did chronological over the Christmas holidays and preferred it to release order, however I wouldn't recommend it for someone who hasn't watched all the films. It's nice to see how all the stories knit together with chronological but they released them in a particular order for a reason.

Oh and Spiderman Homecoming isn't on Disney+ so you'll have to buy/rent it, at least it wasn't back in dec/jan.

+1 for release order.

The only thing that is a bummer is that you will never be able to experience the emotional crescendo and climax that came from watching these spaced out over ten years of your life.

Honestly incredible.

I told her not to do it but she’s young (20), and she listened to another 24yr old at work because that’s the way she also watched it. Watching it chronologically totally ruins the impact of the story because much of the impact of the film was that moment.

Other movies might not have such a big twist, but the point remains the same, all those little twists or plot reveal were placed there because the writers at the time knows what came before.

You will get a much more rewarding experience watching it in release order.

So there's two main ways - chronological order by action or chronological by release date. I personally prefer the chronology by action because it makes the build up and relationships etc. make more sense. If you're looking for shorter binges, watching by franchise is also a nice chance for a mid-week Marvel burst!
