Mass Effect 1 and 2

I never do the side missions, its a roleplay game so I roleplay, given that the galaxy is in imminent danger it wouldn't really be within my role to go off and find someone's missing data disk or a missing soldier or whatever. The galaxy is in danger that's what I would be focusing on, not needless diversions which only delay my chances of saving the galaxy.

Maybe, but if you do that people die!

There's at least 2 side missions in ME2 that should have a big impact in ME3, and there's a decision in ME1 that would also seem to have a ramifications for ME3.

What I'll be interested in seeing is if the DLC addons like Lair of the Shadow Broker will have an effect on ME3.

oh is that why the Grunt and Mordin died in my game, because I didn't do their side quests?

for everybody to survive, you need to do the side missions yes. if you spoke enough to Jacob at all during the game, he would have hinted at this. He tells you something along the lines of you needing everybodys confidence before you start the final assault, or something like that.

Then they die, the fate of the galaxy is more important than a few people. Acceptable losses. :)

My shepard is ruthless and gets the task done with singular determination no matter the cost.

I read in a game guide that I lost Tali because of the fact that I used her for one of the end tasks... I did do her side quest. I keep meaning to go and play through the last mission again and do things differently to keep everyone alive but I'm struggling to motivate myself to do it (wonder if I can modify the save game to stop her being dead in ME3 if I import my savegame...)

I didn't mind losing Miranda as she was a moody cow, but I quite liked Tali..

apparently wen the suicide mission becomes available, if you do too many side quests then, your assistant, that woman doctor and random crew mates will die (not squad mates)

Squad members all alive, but my girlfriend /assistant croaked in the tube...shame realy as I had taken her to dinner and everythin' as well.

But as Spock says, "The needs of the many..."etc etc.

I'd agree that the first game has a much better story than the first. The reveals in the first one are amazing, much better than the second.

Also the combat in the second, whilst much more polished, is much more predictable and repetitive. As soon as you see a room full of waist high boxes you know you're going into combat.

Also definitely make sure you get the lair of the shadowbroker DLC for ME2 it adds another 2-3 hours of solid storyline but also adds quite a bit of extra backstory/additional depth to the main game. Even if the DLC is basically a rip off of bladerunner/fifth element.

Complete the 1st one is a must i say as the choices you make will affect next 2 mass effects, also the story is just great

Yes, definitely get lotsb and kasumi. Overlord, your choice but is not really essential IMO.

Well I picked up Mass Effect 2 the other day and have just completed it. Have to say I was hugely surprised and had a real blast playing it. Now I am thinking the same as the OP should I get the first one or not.

I wouldn't mind playing through 2 again tbh I enjoyed it that much. See what playing full Paragon or full renegade is like I was kinda bit of both maybe a bit more the do-gooder.

Also I picked up Dragon Age Origins last xmas but did not take to it and never gave it a proper chance. Playing through this has kinda made me want give that another go.

What to do people ?

I have yet to play Dragon age so I cant comment on that, but you should give ME1 a go if you liked the story in ME. I would like to suggest that you play as soldier and pop the difficulty on easy though as the combat is really clunky compared to ME2 and I can get frustrating.

Did you get any of the DLC when you played through ME2 Kauto?
