Or just play it without, I rented so had to play without using the code, at no point did I feel like I'd missed out on anything.

Some one else asked that question on another thread.
It seems you will need the Cerberus code for the DLC.
I wasn't sure what exactly that contained as I bought it last week from new.
I checked the offical ME2 site and they had this to say:
"Activate your Cerberus Network card and receive access to exclusive benefits. Revisit the emotionally stirring Normandy SR-1 crash site, recruit the deadly bounty hunter for hire Zaeed Massani, equip the latest gear and firepower with the Cerberus Assault Armour and Eviscerater Shotgun, and pilot the formidable Hammerhead. With more content and updates coming free to Cerberus Network members, make sure you activate your card inside your copy of Mass Effect 2. Check back often for all the latest info and upcoming content for Mass Effect 2!"
So I think getting the Cerberus code is pretty improtant especially if you want all the DLC.

So I think getting the Cerberus code is pretty improtant especially if you want all the DLC.
With the Cerberus Network code you get a few free DLC items, none of which really impact the story unless you want all possible squadmates (Zaeed needs the cerberus network).
The other DLC should be purchasable as normal and IIRC the PS3 comes with some other bits and peices that PC/Xbox versions either have to pay for or flat out can't get.

Just finished this last night, has to be one of the best games I have played in a long long, time.
Its been a while since I finished a game and felt so satisfied and sad that it was finished.
Excellent story and amazing game play, def one of my top 3 games of all time. Epic.
I also love the fact that once you finish it you can play it form the start but import all your data from the pervious game. So I start the game with all my weapons armors, powers and states (level 27) great!!!!
If you aint got it BUY IT!!!!!!!
