i wish i could use one of those flashers from men in black to wipe my mind and experience these games again for the first time

yes they are great great games, the first game is definatley not without its flaws and the combat wasnt amazing but if you let yourself get sucked into the universe you end up getting so attached to the characters they seem like old friends by the end. (mass effect fanboy here)
Yeah one of, if not the best action / RPG's out there.

Yes ME1 makes you feel you're in the middle of something quite epic. There are some crossovers to ME2 too so the story will not make complete sense without playing the first. Imo the second is good but ME1 is the better story.
Cons
Repetitive interiors
Awful DLC (but free) Thought i was doing a side quest.
Awful side quests.
Awful driving game play.
Awful inventory. So simplistic its long winded to search for stuff.
Regurgitated enemies. I.e. The various incarnations of zombies.
Never had to buy anything in game.
Pros
Big maps.
Epic story.
Very fun to play.
If you are not one of those people who has to be set homework to read an hour a week you might be interest in the books. There are three, all very good to run along side playing the game.

Please play the first one first, it allows you to appreciate the story a lot more. If the combat bothers you in ME1, just stick it on casual difficulty and do missions as you receive them (don't go flying to systems for no reason). Certainly don't bother with the collection quests.

Well I've been convinced to get both too now! Looking forward to playing them 
I loved the first despite the clunky combat, and cookie-cutter planets. The story and characterisation were amazing.
The second I loved on a first playthrough, but on a second its flaws became very apparent. It's a lot slicker experience than the first, but the story is nowhere near as epic, and the mission structure is too predictable, especially when you see another room of waist high boxes which telegraph you're about to go into combat.

Agree, epic storyline. Cant wait for 3.
