Okay I just got the stuff from the lady, I go to the equipment menu, equip it and everything, but it looks like I don't have any grenades in the first place?

its a grenade upgrade, it will only be selectable under shepard

You kinda need grenades for them to work

Or you can go up to them and melee them

Yep, and I think my only option is now to melee as I don't have any grenades.

There is a pack of 5 grenades after you get back to Zhu's Hope (just by where Fai Dan and Arcenia were standing at the beginning).

You'll come across some grenades in Zhu's Hope, atleast the bit before you go underground.
