Just about to start Mass Effect and being a bit of a rpg noob, what difficulty setting should I start on? I want to have a challenge but at the same time, I don't want it to detract from the storyline.

Normal or Veteran?

cheers.

Veteran is a nice blend of difficult but not frustrating IMO should be fine for anyone with any previous fps or rpg experience, Normal the fights will be a bit bland.

I think veteran might be slightly tricky for a first timer. If you're experienced then it's like 'normal' mode. You can adjust it ingame anyway, so can always change it depending on how many times you are getting wtfpwned.

I'd love to be able to play Mass Effect 1 and 2 straight through again now without having already played them :D be warned tho it can take a bit to get into it the first couple of hours can be a bit overwhelming especially ME1 where it doesn't make the weapon upgrades, ammo types, etc. very clear.

Yes play Normal... its been a while since i played ME but early game will be very unforgiving, especially while you're learning the ropes. You get incentive to play through multiple times anyway so can up the difficulty on a new game or start on Insanity with a new game +

Aye, 'twill be tricky at first learning about the biotic powers and tech mines and whathaveyou. Another vote for normale.

In my experience mass effect 1 and 2 were way too easy on normal. I was a first timer aswell and there was no challenge. I loved the games though, best I've played.
As for understanding the weapon setups etc it is abit overwhelming to begin with but the difficulty level makes no difference to that anyway, put the difficulty on the next one up from normal, whatever that is.:)

I guess it depends as well what class you play as, the more offensive/weapon based classes Normal would be way too easy to anyone with any previous gaming experience unless you suck, but classes with primarily defensive biotic/tech powers will be quite hard for a first run on Veteran.

I always stick these kinds of games on the hardest difficulty and so far Mass Effect is good fun - not been too tough now I've got the controls (powers etc) down.

Will do the same with ME II once I complete this!

I played normal and dont remember any frustrating restart over and over moments.

Infact in the final boss fight I did not die once.

Trouble with ME1 is insanity just gives nearly everyone immunity. So you pour bullets into a guy for a minute each before they drop with no real threat back.
