The producers behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man are teaming for Mass Effect, a live-action, big screen adaptation of the Electronic Arts-BioWare videogame.

Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni have acquired the film rights to the game and will produce the movie along with former Marvel Studios honcho Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Casey Hudson. Warner Bros. will distribute the film.

Furthermore, the producers are in negotiations with screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) about penning the script. The Mass Effect movie is in the nascent stages of development.

"Mass Effect is a tremendous property ripe for translation to the big screen," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures, in a statement. "Mass Effect is a prime example of the kind of source material we at Legendary like to develop; it has depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story. This coupled with Avi and Ari producing and the skills of a great team adapting the screenplay, are the start of turning this smash videogame based property into a successful feature film."

"We are thrilled to be working with Legendary," said producer Avi Arad. "EA and BioWare are terrific partners who have created a brilliant piece of fiction with a universe filled with amazing aliens and technology. More importantly, though, they created a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together. All this magic is presented in a fast paced action-adventure that makes for the best kind of movie experience."

"At BioWare, we've always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture," said Casey Hudson. "With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans."

BioWare's epic science fiction series takes place in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy who leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life. The most recent game in the series, Mass Effect 2, was released in January of 2010.

Please do not do a Blizzard.

This could be the new Bladerunner!!!!

Come on we all know it will be utter tripe.

Any form of media turned into another type of media rarely works as it can never fit peoples expectations. Books to games, books to films, games to films, games to books, films to books, films to games. They very rarely work and I can't see this being an exception.

But with the guys behind The Dark Knight, i have more hope them pessimism.

Same producers. :( Doesn't mean that everyone that's actually going to have an impact is going to up to the same scratch as for the Dark Knight.

Furthermore, the producers are in negotiations with screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) about penning the script.

I doubt it'll have a fraction of the budget either. I want to look forward to it, I just can't. :(

I know this is a Prey 2 hype video, but just look at it ! If they can make a short film look so awesomely sci-fi then surely WB can make Mass Effect look utterly epic.

Stick a helmet on this guy and give him a female sidekick with nice chebs and it's basicly Mass Effect :p

Best way to deal with this, is to become blissfully unaware, curiosity kills the whole game atmosphere, or rather the latest game turned film does.

I really can't see Mass Effect working as a film either, just all sounds abit bit Star Trek.

Just imagine how rubbish live action krogans are going to look. Poor Wrex, they'll probably make him scottish :(

I actually enjoyed Max Payne...thought it was a pretty decent effort!

The Max Payne movie really annoyed me, they nailed the feel/atmosphere dead on visually/set wise it could have been a truly epic movie if they'd got the writing upto the same level but they obviously didn't understand the character of Max Payne or the depth of the original story (which granted takes a few replays to actually fully grasp) it felt like they'd watched the graphic novel/seen a bit of footage of people playing and went from there - 1-2 scenes really worked like the bathroom scene but stood alone - I think part of the problem was Mark Wahlberg didn't really have an interest in getting properly into character I think he kinda saw it as some cash on the side - which is a shame as it had potential to be really huge.

Some of the voice actors could easily play themselves in the movie. I believe the guy who plays Joker (Seth Green) has already stated in an interview he would like to do it.

Yeah a large number of the voice actors (well Mass Effect 2 - not so much the original) are also from the cast of Chuck and many of them have expressed an interest in doing acting or voice acting if it ever became a movie adaption.

EDIT: Well I think it was 3 of them at comic con or somewhere when asked but thats a good number :D
