[Avoid massive spoilers please!]

So, I'm near the end of Mass Effect with Infiltrator Shepard at the moment (I played ME2 first so now will have to play through again, d'oh!). Anyways, I was wondering who your preferred squadmates were in these games?

For most of ME1, I'd been taking Wrex and Ashley along purely for firepower and because Wrex was a real character. Garrus got some use and I only took Tali along when I'd cleared a mission and wanted to open difficult crates. Kaidan seemed pretty useless and had zero personality, plus whenever I spoke to him in the Normandy, I thought the porn music was about to start.

I just finished Virmire but for that mission, I had a swap around and took Liara and Garrus with me to the base and can't believe how awesome they are together. I really wish I'd experimented with different squads a bit more throughout the game. :(

Looks like those two will be coming for the rest of the trip now ;)

For ME2 I really enjoyed taking Zaeed, Legion, Grunt or Garrus along. Miranda got on my nerves.:)

Anyways, it'd be interesting to see who others took and why, and as a tip to anyone playing these games for the first time, rotate your squads and try new things! :D

Well im trying to play through ME1

I've got about 5/6 people at my disposal, ive forgotten, ive done the first mission at the citidel now its off to some unknown planet and im unsure who to take.

Im playing as an Adept, tempted to go just for pure firepower :D

As an infiltrator in ME1 I always used Wrex and Liara. Since generally you want to be at the back sniping things. So I always prefered having Wrex as my tank running in head first with a shotgun. Then Liara as a biotics user to keep things at bay. Mean while you can chill in the background and snipe things.

Plus Wrex and Liara are my fav characters in ME1 :)

For ME2, I used Grunt and Kasumi (if you have the DLC) or alternativly Mordin. Who by the way Mordin is THE best character EVER !!!! :p

Makes sense. I'd go for Wrex and Ashely/Garrus perhaps, if I was biotic. Tali may help with frying Geth but you probably want meat shields. You can always make a save before trying out new squadmates in case you really struggle with them. Make sure you swap around and try other squadmates out as I really regret sticking to the same 2 or 3 for most of the game. :(

That was my intention, however, I found that pistols in ME1 are absolutely friggin' amazing when maxed out with Master Marksman. I was tearing everything apart and only using the sniper rifle on targets that were visible from distance, rarely using it mid-battle. Ho hum! I did a LOT more sniping in ME2, must be to do with level layouts.

It's down to your play style though I guess. I always had the pistol as a secondary weapon. So when entering combat, send squadmates in and let the do their thing. While I ran back and sniped off what I could as they began to push on me I would whip out the pistol :p and use that.

But for me generally I liked staying back with my infiltrator as much as. You can do insane damage with a sniper rifle if your good at using them.

Infiltrator I think was one of my favourite classes. After that I tried out vanguard which was pretty fun but man I died a lot of times through charging in and just getting surrounded lol.

I'm a coward and usually snipe in most games where I have the option, however, I did find closer combat quite satisfying in ME1. Master Assassination with appropriate ammo was pretty amazing, though. Those Krogan didn't stand a chance. :D

I fancy another playthrough as Sentinel or Adept in all honesty. How fun that would be depends on how good your squadmate AI is. One thing that peed me off a bit in ME1 was that my squadmates were firing into walls/objects that were between them and their target quite a lot.

So, I'm not convinced that they'd provide good enough backup.. :/

Adept is pretty crazy, I can't remember the name of the move but that vortex one which makes them float. Get that out there in the middle of a few enemies then as they get captured by the vortex lauch a warp. Then BOOM ! explodes on impact = instant satisfaction.

The only problem with that tactic is it doesnt work on bosses :( But still fun as hell to see a load of Krogan or Geth go flying after a exploded warp :D Adept was fun but I did struggle on bosses for some reason with Adept in ME1. Nothing I did ever seemed that effective.

<snip>

That'll be singularity? It's always good to have some tech along for Dampening and Overload on the tougher enemies as well IMO. I can't believe I went 95% of the game without seeing that power (until I brought Liara along). Combat seems trivial with it!

From memory ME1 was usually Wrex and Liara because Wrex was the most fun and Liara was my romance interest so it seemed in character to have her around.

Currently playing ME2 and using Mordin as much as possible (because dialogue) and alternating between Miranda for base/chat/walkaround missions and Jack for fighty missions, though she's starting to be a bit weak (and one-note-boring). Might use Miranda a bit more as 'overload;' is frankly ace as a companion to my fire assault rifle.

I always took from Wrex\Garrus\Ashley but was personal preference, I didnt think about why, until later when I needed specific things.

Garrus and Tali(until I got Legion), sometimes Thane. Always Garrus though...if you ever removed Garrus from your squad you have problems in your head :D

ME1- Garrus and Liara(though on replaying, more likely Garrus and Tali)
ME2- A complete mix, but my main 2 are Miranda and Tali
ME3- meh, none of them are worth using for dialogue or anything...and the ones that are are usually automatically put in.

Like you I didn't experiment much with squads at all, usually the resident Biotic that you get at the start of the games, who's names I forget, would get let behind.

Normally I'd pick based on what weapons they could carry / had skills in or something like that, in ME1 you had to micromanage your inventory, in ME2 I think you got upgrades or something for weapons that different characters could take. But generally I liked characters with sniper or assualt rifle so Garrus was a key pick usually.

I think I mostly used Garrus, Wrex/Grunt and Liara.

Pretty much always Tali and Garrus throughout the 3 games.

ME 1 - I had Tali always in for her hacking, plus I found her character interesting. Garrus was the other person about 75% of the time, the other was generally Wrex but stopped using him after the square off.
ME 2 - Tali became the love interest so had her on the team a lot, and Garrus again pretty much all the time as his character developed really well and his story got a lot more interesting. Plus the reminiscent banter him and Tali had due to being squad mates in ME1 was good. Samara got a look in some times as a temporary Garrus replacement as she was extremely powerful and the Ardat Yakshi and Justicar story was interesting.
ME 3 - Tali and Garrus again as I used them pretty much always for the other games.
