So I got Mass Effect from the Steam deals a couple of days ago, only just got round to playing it last night.

The game is ridiculously choppy, both in cutscenes and ingame (even in the menu?!).

Basically every few seconds it will just "freeze" for a moment and then continue, making it pretty much unplayable. I've tried changing all the settings to min, switching everything off, tried everything maxed, and everything in between, no difference. Anyone have any ideas what else to try?

oops, knew I forgot something! =P

Athlon 64 X2 4400+
2GB RAM
ATI HD4890 1GB
450GB free HDD space
Soundblaster Audigy zs platinum pro

ok so it's not exactly the latest and greatest, but it should be more than powerful enough.

I don't get any problems on any other game, so was finding it a bit wierd =/

Might not be a hardware issue. If it's bad even in minimum settings, there's obviously something wrong somewhere. See if you can update any of your drivers, be it graphics, or audio, and so on.

I had issues with this game with Q9550, 4GB, GTX 260 maxcore.

Didn't matter what settings, resolutions, drivers or operating system I used, it still ran crap.

Yet Bioshock, Batman AA and Unreal 3 all ran great using the same game engine.

Meh, that's pretty crap. I'm running XP, any chance this is the problem? I might stick Vista or 7 on a spare HDD and see if it's any better with that =/
