Mass Effect Requires Online Validation Every Ten Days to Function

Apparently the downloading isn't illegal, only the uploading.

Well according the law (as I've just found out). There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with downloading (maybe, if they proved it was on servers outside of the UK, but I'm not lawyer so I don't know for sure) but yes, uploading is the problem.

What about that woman who was taken to court and fined over downloading some MP3's? Or is that a different case because it's music rather than games?

I don't remember this, are we talking about an American case? That crap is always happening over there.

I really can't remember, all I do remember was something about a mother being dragged to court and threatened with a fine over a few MP3's or something.

Probably was America, I remember the RIAA (or something) being involved.

Yeah it'll be in America, the RIAA always do that to people over there.

Taylor believes that digital authentication and an increase of post-launch content downloads available to legitimate owners of PC gaming software would help combat software piracy. It was recently revealed that BioWare's Mass Effect and EA Maxis' Spore would make use of copy protection requiring online validation every ten days.
not sure if thats been mentioned but im sure it will upset more of you ^^ source http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52593

Ah right. I guess I've just seen Spore mentioned alongside Mass Effect so many times I kind of have them both together in my head anyhow :)

BioWare community manager Jay Watamaniuk broke the news on the company's official forums.

"To all the fans including our many friends in the armed services and internationally who expressed concerns that they would not be able re-authenticate as often as required, EA and BioWare want you to know that your feedback is important to us," said Watamaniuk.

Looks like the FAQ has been updated too!

Q: If the game isn't going to require an authentication every 10 days, will it ever require re-authentication?

A: Only if the player chooses to download new game content.

Much better. Its more like Halo 2 and Shadowrun now, where you install it, activate it and play, no need for the DVD. I did reach my installation limits a couple of times with them and a simple phone call with a machine sorted it out. Hopefully EA's is similar. Might have to buy it now :).
