Hi all
I'm desperately hoping someone can help me with an extremely frustrating issue that's been driving me nuts!
I recently spent a lot of money on significantly upgrading my Gaming PC, and am struggling with an unexplained and sudden drop in my fps across multiple games.
Directly after upgrading my PC, and for the following few weeks thereafter, everything was great and the gaming performance was perfectly inline with what you might expect from the hardware I am running.
Pretty much overnight, however, something has happened and my fps across multiple games has plummeted. It is not an intermittent drop in fps, but rather consistently poor, as if the system suddenly lost all of its horsepower while in game.
I am not aware of anything that happened to trigger this, and did not knowingly make ANY changes to anything or knowingly upgrade any drivers or software either.
I have the following setup:
To provide an idea on the problem, I was playing the following games with no issues previously:
The steps I have taken to fix the situation are:
Since I can't seem to insert the screenshots, here are some key data from CPU-z and GPU-Z while Battlefield 1 is playing:
Absolutely everything is telling me the system is running perfectly, and at full speed, but the fps counter in all games is simply contradicting everything else.
I'm completely stumped, and don't know what to do. Any assistance really would be greatly appreciated.

- Intel Core i7 8700k
- MSI Z370 PC PRO
- 16GB DDR4 3200mhz
- ASUS nVIDIA GTX 1080Ti 11GB
- Hard drives are 3 Samsung SSD's (an EVO 840, 850 and 860). Samunsg Magician reports all 3 as running optimally with latest firmware and on 6GB SATA interface
- Dell S2716DG 1440P G-sync monitor (primary screen, connected via DisplayPort. G-Sync is enabled in Nvidia settings)
- Samsung T28C570 1080P monitor (connected via HDMI)
- Corsair CS650M PSU
- Windows 10 64 bit
- Nvidia 416.34 drivers
- CPU and GPU are NOT overclocked
To provide an idea on the problem, I was playing the following games with no issues previously:
- Battlefield 1, Ultra settings, 1440P, average around 120/130 fps
- Far Cry 5, Ultra settings, 1440P, average around 100 fps
The steps I have taken to fix the situation are:
- Reinstalled Nvidia drivers
- Rolled back to older Nvidia drivers
- Disabled G-Sync
- Ensured v-sync is disabled in all games
- Updated BIOS
- Reinstalled Windows
- I lent the GFX card to a mate who ran it in his system, and got the performance and FPS you might expect from a GTX 1080Ti
- Ensured DX12 is DISABLED in all games
- Running 'Time Spy' 3DMark benchmark on my PC with default settings yields a score of 8967, with a Graphics score of 9335 and a CPU score of 7333. Comparing these results to similar systems, it's exactly inline with what you would expect, so the hardware seems to be working just fine.
Since I can't seem to insert the screenshots, here are some key data from CPU-z and GPU-Z while Battlefield 1 is playing:
- GPU Core Clock: 1480Mhz (consistent)
- GPU Memory Clock: 1377Mhz (consistent)
- GPU temperature: 76 deg - 82 deg
- Memory Used: 5088MB
- GPU load: 98% - 100% (consistent)
- CPU Temperature: 53 deg
- Bus Interface: PCIe x16 3.0
Absolutely everything is telling me the system is running perfectly, and at full speed, but the fps counter in all games is simply contradicting everything else.
I'm completely stumped, and don't know what to do. Any assistance really would be greatly appreciated.
