Anyone else watching this?

I love the early episodes with the skills test the most.

I generally don't bother with normal MasterChef but I do find watching the pro's who work in Michelin star restaurants crumble a bit on what should be a simple skills test for those at that level entertaining.

The pressure/stress in that environment must be incredible to make proper chefs lose it.

A lot of them do better for second task. I like how he seems genuinely happy when they do well

It's a very supportive kind of reality TV it's not voyeuristic and it's not about demeaning people. I personally enjoy watching the growth of the best young chefs as the competition progresses. I like Michel Roux Jr too, but Marcus has really grown on me. Monica on the other hand I sometimes find a little partial but not badly so. It's nice filler telly for me.

I recently re-watched an earlier season (season 2) and Monica was so vicious back then, and the tasks were massively more complicated, 10 minutes to do a skills test and a palate test from Monica, I preferred the format of more cooking, but it's much better now. Even if I do still miss Michel Roux Jr.

I love the Professionals series more than the amateurs. i think this is proper Masterchef. They get a wide range of chefs so it's fascinating to see people trying to break through into fame.

The skills test is always amazing - the nerves, the ability to adapt to a new dish, experience, etc. It's brutal!

I think they've got a strong formula in whittling them down too - seeing them go through the critics section is equally difficult, though it's amazing when they shine. I normally try and predict a winner after the first set of critics tests.

Yep thats why I prefer Professionals.

You can usually tell whose gonna do well once they get past the first few challenges and I do normally pick a couple of favourites who I wanna see go to the end.

Any favourites so far?

I'm thinking Philippe (french guy) and Tom (ginger guy in last week) are the standouts so far.

So many good chefs as always, some of the food has me amazed.

I'm not traditionally a fan of these near-the-final episodes where they sod off to a foreign restaurant somewhere. But this one is plumbing new depths

Nope, they're my least favourite type of episodes.

And, TBF, I know filming and broadcasting are very different timelines. But still, how much influence on a chef's menu can such an experience have at late notice?

Quite.

You've got that, you've got the lack of any kind of TV jeopardy because the final three is set and no-one is getting ejected from the competition at this point, plus they always seem to find a restaurant ran by a 14ct **** with a 'vision'.

'Holistic food'. Jesus H. tapdancing Christ...

Only read this if you've watched the final...

Really glad Tom won it! Such a nice guy, from a family of cooks. Seriously talented I think he will probably develop into a top chef but stay grounded.

I really disliked the Danish restaurant bit with Rasmus Munk etc. That felt like proper ****. I'm all for his messaging & focusing people on the environment etc., but it felt so false and overblown. I reckon most people who eat there are proper ***** with too much money for their own good.
