Currently applying for an online masters course, Environmental management with the University of Derby (just up the road from me).

Personal statement wise, are they looking for the next Dickens novel or something brief but covering all points?I'm just wondering what lengths others have gone to on personal statements for masters courses. Interested to hear what others put in their applications, or other who've done this course or are in this sector!

Not that field but have successfully applied to masters courses before.

Personal statement had a bit about my undergrad + other related study/side projects relevant to the masters. A bit about why I wanted to study with that department/and that particular subject(if it follows on nicely from parts of your undergrad then this can be easy to demonstrate especially if you've scored highly in the relevant modules on your degree transcript - if it is for a career change, completely different subject etc.. then you might want to put in some detail regarding that). - you can highlight perhaps modules that you're interested in (if you've got a choice) and maybe mention a thesis topic (assuming you do one for that course). Also future goals - what you want to do with the masters - further study, particular careers etc..?

Whole thing would have been 1 side of A4 - obviously check any guidelines for word/character limits (some departments will quote both upper and lower bounds for this).

Also it is worth having a chat with your referees and making them clear on what you're applying for and your future goals etc.. so they can try to tailor the reference.

They basically what to know that you're capable of coping with the content of the course and also some indication of interest in that subject area & some idea of what you want from the course.

Great! thanks for the input.

It loosely develops on topics from my undergrad degree, but I mainly want to do it because that's where the big area for growth is, and I certainly in my company I find that area a lot more interesting.

Is it oversubscribed? If not, just scrawl "I wanna learns, innit" and staple a copy of your bank statement to the application.

If you meet, or vaguely approximate, their entry requirements you'll be fine.
