Masters course - does time after BSc matter?

Graduate schemes seem more bothered about your UCAS points than your degree classification. Got a 2:2? Come on board, provided that years ago when you wore a school blazer you spent your time doing revision instead of Counter-Strike. Got a 2:1 or even a 1st? Well.... go away ;)

I guess I fall into this category(not for playing CS though!). I did terribly at school. Didn't even stay on for highers/a-levels. The only thing that got me by was my portfolio.

I'm pretty sure you can resit if you fail but the mark for whatever you resit is capped at 3rd?

I never looked in to this so I'm probably wrong (just a presumption).

depends on the subject and where you got it though...

say someone got a fairly decent AAB at A-level yet ended up with a 2.2 in maths/engineering/(other degree that requires work) from warwick/imperial/UCL/(other decent redbrick) then yeah I could easily see that still making them more employable than a 2.1 in some arts subject from an ex poly.

I'm not saying 2.2s are great though - the vast majority of students at decent universities get 2.1s! A 2.2 is, in reality, a sub standard degree.

You'd think so but it doesn't seem to matter..

'Must have... 2:2 in any discipline and 900000000000 UCAS points. Got a 1st and 899999999999 UCAS points? Get lost unless you had a medical reason'

Thing is, with private companies, everything can be disregarded - if they think you're good they'll hire you - don't start thinking there are hard and fast rules - I've been on a grad scheme where a couple of non grads were present alongside people with masters degrees from top institutions.

If someone got a 1st in a hard subject from a decent uni then, so long as their CV was generally good, I doubt that being 1 UCAS point below their criteria will mean their CV is automatically binned.

Tis more people who get 2.1s from polys etc.. they are trying to filter out - tis a good bet that the guy with CDE at A-level but a 2.1 in IT from XYZ poly had a bit of an easier 'vocational course' than the guy with AAB and a 2.2 in physics from Imperial.

To be honest, in the line of work I want to go into (Trainee Forensic Psychologist/Assistant Psychologist) they just specify you need a degree, there is much more emphasis on having work experience with children and/or people in hospitals etc.
Glad I got accepted to do this student mentor thing for a summer school, at least it will give me some form of work experience.
The thing that really annoys me is that the prison website is quite regularly updated with jobs, i've seen tons go by that I could have applied for but they are all for in the midlands or down south. The closest one I've seen was in Wetherby, and thats too far for a daily commute, other than moving to somewere else in the country if i get the job i'm a little limited for job opportunities at the moment!

There is nothing wrong with a 2.2 - it's a solid degree. Although I was 1.4% away from a 2.1 - maybe I should have got it remarked? I'm happy either way.

I may be wrong on this but,if you are 1.4% off 2.1, doesnt the actual percentage and its close proximity to 2.1 often matter to the employer? I mean somebody happening to get just within the 2.1 range should not in practise be miles ahead, if you know what I mean.

Every assessment day I've been too, I've been the only person with a 2:2, everybody else had a 2:1 from a Uni i've never heard of, and some generic degree like American drama and child studies.

Sure, a 2.2 has hindered me applying to big banks etc (although I did interview at a hedge fund which would have been just as good) but thankfully being Warwick and Physics has softened the blow.

I work in marketing now (kinda) and a lot of the people at my company don't even have degrees :) i'm working my way up from the bottom in this industry

Depends though, a lot of places will just filter through the initial applications so most people with 2:2s won't even get looked at.
