Hi folks,

I have been craving a good 4x strategy game for a while now and have decided to turn to some old classics.

I have ordered BOTF online, and whilst I wait for that to arrive I have purchased MOO2 from gog.com. Shame BOTF isn't on there.

Any experienced players able to offer a few pointers to a newbie?

I am not looking for a power player / min max ultimate strategy or anything like that, just perhaps a few tips or pointers that otherwise be easy for a new player to miss.

In these sorts of games I tend to favour smaller but technologically superior races / fleets rather than spreading sparsely, would that be a viable strategy?

Loving the old school manual for MOO2, it wil take a while to read through :)

Thanks in advance!

never played Masters of Orion, but played Birth of the Federation to the death, must have had hundreds of games of that. best advice for those sorts of games is bide your time, don't make pointless enemies, make friends not enemies. the once your military is established and you have a foothold, then you can choose to attack or not.

must admit Birth of the Federation for me is one of the best games ever, such a massive shame nobody made a sequel, people need to stop making these stupid, simple games and get back to that sort of classic format.

Its not a new copy of BOTF, I have bought it 2nd hand.

I hope it runs ok on windows 7!

*edit there are more 2nd hand copies going on the rainforest website, although fairly pricey at £17 inc delivery, Original disc and jewel case only, with inlays.

I got mine for £12 with a manual though, no box.

I love Botf and I have just found my disc as well, I have also found a small modding community that has just updated a mod with the dominion istead of the ferengi. They have added new minor races, and new ships, deffinate improvement. search for Ultimate Dominion mod III, and its version D which is the newest version

Look out for botf website/forums on the net, has some good guides and mods.

Edit - here.. http://www.armadafleetcommand.com/botf/index.php

Generally when i play botf i play by expanding asap get some dedicated systems i.e if its got a good population and grows quick then its a ship building system, if not much population then i keep em for things for cardy or romys for intel or research like phoenix facilities etc. So them tiny crap systems do come in handy for them systems.

For romy and cardy use their tal shiar and obsidion order abilities so be a player dedicated to spying and sabotage etc. Klingon play, i would conquor, for feds bribe all the minors asap before others get em and prioritise if u can.

Scrap scouts if u need cash quick.

Just a few tips.

Btw were working on botf 2 a fan made project, been going for years with some good active times and some down times due to real life things.

Our forums, theres a beta out for botf2/supremacy which you can try, it has no ai yet but has mp, no combat either yet im afraid.

There is a botf 2 game as well called birth of the empires on our forum but its led by a different group from us but we have a forum for them and they are much futher along, unfortunatly they thought there would be problems with a trek game so they went for their own IP instead but its basically botf just with a different IP i.e races and stuff. They have combat and ai i think and more fleshed out features if u fancy trying that. Their was a recent release of a build not long ago.

Oh and if playing on a modern Os like win 7, get the patch by joker, it fixes a lot of things and restores cutscenes functionality in the game and other fixes which are vital to play. Find it at AFC site linked above.

Edit - Just to clarify botf 2 and bote are not mods but full freshly built games from the ground up.
