Hi guys
I'm nearly ready to buy my new PC. Ideally I'd want one just as fast as my mates new PC. (he seems to think it's not going to happen but hopefully with your help, I'll try. :))

His PC
Q9650 overclocked to 3.8GHz
8GB DDR3
2x GTX280 SLI
300GB Velociraptor
Don't know his motherboard and other parts
Vista 64 bit

My Spec
i7 940 @ stock
6GB DDR3
1792MB GTX295
300GB Velociraptor
1TB Samsung F1
Vista 64bit
not sure about motherboards yet

Does my 940 need to be overclocked to 3.8GHz before it's as powerful as his? And will his 2GB extra ram make much difference over my 6GB?

Thanks for helping :)

I would say the 280 sli is slightly faster than a 295.

Don't waste your money on a 940 buy a 920 and overclock so easily past 940 speeds.

6 - 8 jump in memory wont make much difference.

When you say you want a faster computer than his is it for gaming or 3dmark tests?

If its gaming and fps results its all down to the GPU's really.

Raid0 a couple of hard drives wll also make your system faster than his too.

Just get a 920 and clock it, it'll clock upto 4 GHz anyway, add one of the noctua coolers (£57) your RAM should be faster as it no longer gors through a separate memory controller. Id recomend either the gigabyte UD5 or Asus P6T for a board.
And to sum up, yes yours will be faster

Agree with above, definitely go with an 920, still going to be better when clocked than his.

Do you have a budget for the motherboard? The Asus P6T deluxe is on TWO atm, seems like a pretty good deal, though i'm not an X58 expert.

Just checked some review site's, it runs at the same speed as a 260 but has same amount of shaders per GPU as a 280.

Wow! thanks guys, fast response :)
Pred Mainly for gaming but yeah it would be nice to at least equal whatever score he gets in 3dMark :) Okay, I'll drop the 940 and go with 920 as you are all saying it's a better choice & value. So maybe get the same GTX280s too.
Alexhull24 The Asus P6T Delux was indeed the one I was considering.

...And maybe Pred's idea of RAID too

Thanks for your input everyone, most apprechiated.

(just got a few more posts whilst replying, so it's safe to stick with 1x GTX295?)

1x GTX295 is fine, unless you want to show off to your friends you get a 2x GTX295. Also the small fact it will use way more electricty when at full load. But if you can afford 2x GTX295 then electricty bills will be the last thing on your mind.

I my self would love to have 2xGTX295 and set them folding :)
