Greetings from Laguna Beach, California, USA! (with sincerest apologies for Bush)

Ok, I wish I had more time but rebates end today, and other such deadlines I have.

I've never OC'd, and my goal is to match components first, learn how to OC them later. I'm also buying for the future, so I'm staying with DDR3.

To that end I've used the last few days to learn just enough to be dangerous, and need a reality check before putting in the orders.

Targets: 400 FSB

Motherboard: Asus Rampage Extreme : Dual-channel DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066/800 MHz

* So this will run 400 FSB stock, yes?
* Will that be a "stable stock speed" or "lucky" 400?
* Will future OC'ing to 2000 be limited to MB stability or CPU/Mem Stability?

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8600

* This has a 10 multiplier, Yes?
* At FSB 333, FSB speed = 4(two x two-way cores) x 333 or 1333MHz, yes?
* Setting the MB FSB to 400 to get the CPU to 4GHz is dependent on the CPU stability only (assume 400FSB Memory), yes?

Memory: OCZ OCZ3P1600EB4GK Enhanced Bandwidth 4GB Kit 1600MHz DDR3 PC3-12800

* CL7-6-6-24 1.9V on Asus Boards
* This is 1600 with a 400 FSB, yes?
* Is this because of the dual channel mode?
* In order to run this RAM at 400 I have to use 1:2 divider?
* Choosing a 1:2 divider is a stock setting, yes?
* Will the 12800 be stressing at 400 FSB, or should I go to 14000?

I'd really appreciate corrections to my assumptions above, as well as comments whether the above components are reasonable (price < OC fun < future upgrades), or if there's a big red flag that I wouldn't know about yet, I'd really appreciate the advice.

Thanks!

Welcome! To be honest ddr3 would most likely be a waste of time and money especially if you're just overclocking an e8600, which is a good choice i have to say! You'd be better off with lower timed ddr2 which will run 1:1

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm getting some other feedback that says with the Nehalem coming anticipating upgrading anything not Nehalem will be a poor choice.

I'll just toss the savings into 8gb mem instead. Unless you have a better idea!

Cheers!
