My HR department are struggling to work out my leave entitlement on a pro rata basis and I know there are some good brains on here so asking for help.

I work part time working 3 days one week and four the next. I am entitled to bank holidays

My working pattern is such that in my last year (Nov-Nov) there have been 8 bank holidays and 7 of them have fallen outside my working days i.e when I have been not working so I haven't 'benefited' from them.

I work 26 hours a week or 70% of FTE.

Our day is worked out as 7 hours 24 mins. I have used the following calculation and been rejected:

8 bank holidays x 7:24 is 58 hours

26 contractual hours a week divided by 37 (FTE) x 58 hours = 40:45 hours of bank holiday a year. However one must subtract the one bank holiday that I do benefit from so 40:45 - 7:24 = 33 hours 21 mins to add on.

Can any HR/Maths gurus clarify what the actual figure should be?

Stripping it back to hours is how it should be worked out.

So at 37hrs being 1FTE you work out your total hours of holiday entitlement, then add the number of pro rata hours for the bank holidays into your total number of holidays to take. This is your allowance in hours, which you take as you wish.

If your working day falls on a bank holiday, you remove those numbers of hours from your allowance. So -7.5 hrs from your allowance. If the bank holiday does not fall on your working day, you use these hours where you wish - Thus benefiting from the fact you get BH days off, but you would get that % of hours for that day on an alternative day.

I don't have time to sit and work out the maths just this second, but that is the way I calculate out for my staff which ensures you get your "proper" allowance which is fair vs those who are full time and automatically just get a BH off. Happy to run the calcs tomorrow if you need me to but you should be able to do it easily following that method.
Thankyou and yes if you have time would love to see your answer. I have shown my working above and hit a brick wall with my mathematical talent!

We do it using 1/5th of your week. It's pretty simple, so if you work 26 hours, every time there is a BH you clock up 0.2 x 26 = 5.2 hours. This works for everyone, full timers, part timers that work BH's, part timers that don't work BH's... 1/5th of your weekly hours, each time there is a BH.
So 7 bank holidays x 5.2 is 36.4 hours owed. What about the one bank holiday I did get off do I have to subtract 7:24 for that?

Thanks guys!

So in my leave year there are 8 bank holidays in total. There are 7 that I don’t benefit from I.e I don’t work Mondays.

Thanks again :)

@BDEE my employer does recognise bank holidays for me we are just trying to work out what’s what!:D

So my leave year runs Nov 1st 2022 to Nov 1 2023. There are 8 bank holidays in this period (King Charles coronation hasn’t yet been confirmed by my employer so just work it out at 8 for now)

Typically I get 25 days leave which we x 0.70, this aspect isn’t in dispute.

If someone’s able to post their working as well as the answer that would be great!

This is literally their job. Why can't they calculate it? Do you mean they did it and you disagree, or they have plainly said they cannot do it?
We have both come up with different answers! I’ve always felt I’ve been shortchanged each year so am challenging it.Ironically we always take more time trying to work it out than the ‘difference’

So they aren't struggling. They've calculated it and you disagree. Fair enough. What is their answer?
26. And they’ve gone back for another look (2 months ago!) To be fair it is complex already 3 different answers in this thread!
