Can someone please tell me what a Matrix Storage Manager Driver is for?
I'm new to the Intel chipsets as all my boards in the past have all been nForce based.
Is this driver a requirement for raid ,or is it just something that you normally have to install with Intel motherboards?
I'm about to upgrade to a Intel chipset in the next few weeks so it would be a good idea for me to have some sort of idea.

It's the Intel RAID software and driver. You only really need it if you have RAIDed drives.

It's not just for RAID - you also need it if you have AHCI enabled in the BIOS which you want ideally as it enables NCQ.

Vista has an incarnation of the Matrix Storage driver in it, but although it has a newer version number than the latest from Intel, it's actually old and my system frequently hangs whilst doing anything with the hard drives until I install the latest Intel Matrix Storage driver.

If you have the SATA controller set to just IDE mode in the BIOS then don't worry about it.

So if installing Vista. Do you install the Matrix Manager Driver before installing the OS the same as you would do as if installing Raid drivers???

I've been using a Raid0 XP setup for years now, so even Vista is going to be new to me.

If you want to use AHCI then yes, install the Matrix Storage driver during setup as if you were doing any other RAID controller.

I haven't heard of AHCI/NCQ causing reduced performance (personally I haven't really noticed any increase or decrease - it's just the same with or without AHCI) but anything is possible :)
