Some people have different perception/handling of pain though - my mum has all dental work without any anaesthetic as it just doesn't unduly trouble her (she always jokes about "after child birth its just not that bad").

Someone I knew from school developed an entirely different response to pain to a point it was gratifying (he ended up going all "charles bronson").
