So some manufacturers are offering their new cars with a matte paint finish as opposed to the standard type.... Some cars look good in it but just wondering if we will see this paint type eventually filter down to "normal" cars and do you think people will take it up?

I see a lot of people out this way using matt foil wrap on their cars. Not only does it protect the paint, it looks different/cool and can be reversed back to standard paint whenever.

not sure it has the mass market appeal for manufacturers to start adding this option though to regular cars

Who cares about protecting the paint?

The car is for my enjoyment not the next owners, I would rather my car look good for me instead of having a plastic bag shoved over it.

Matt looks ****.

If the feedback from Topgear on the matte M3 is anything to go by it's just a total nightmare.

How much of that holds true is a different question but suffice to say it's going to be harder to care for and KEEP looking good than any regular gloss lacquered paint job is going to be.

Looks horrid. Part of the enjoyment for me is a nice shiney paint job.

I also so like paint full of orange peel to, so am very grateful BMW have gone down this route with paint these days.

Stupid idea that will go out of fashion soon, once that happens god help anyone trying to sell a car with matt paint not a removable wrap.

I bet the inside of the car on a hot day would be unbearable when first getting in surely?

It seems cars are just a fashion accessory these days... but you can't beat spending a good Sunday making your baby shine. Matte colours are just not rewarding in the slightest.

If you've got a cheap project car with knackered paint, I can see the attraction of a DIY job like Lashout did on one of his dollys. For a showroom car, no thanks! Shinier the better.

Matte can look good, when done right, on the right car with the right lines in the right colour. I thought the M3 on the most recent TG with the silver matte looked pretty damn good.

Truth be told, the above criteria is rarely met....most matte jobs just look dire. And when it comes down to it looks are all well and good, but we have cars to drive, not sit in a showroom looking good at the cost of not being able to expose it to the elements.

I quite like it on some cars, but again it's only on some cars it actually works. I've seen an S60 lolvo in matt black and I liked it if only for the whole mad max/post apocalyptic genre of films it brings to mind :)

I was considering a matte black wrap on mine but as people pointed out it didn't suit the car, however I feel a flat White wrap suits it better.

^Looks like it's made out of plastic. Yuck.

Really wish VX had kicked that T bar out of the middle of the grille on the VXR, looks uggers :(

Fiat are now offering matt black on the 500 I'm told. I saw a matt grey M3 and it looked lovely in my opinion but it's not something I would want on my car as I think it's a fad. Some of the dealership bodyshops are now starting to get instruction manuals on how to refinish matt paint after a repair and they reckon it's a nightmare to do.

However I would rather see an actual matt paint job opposed to a wrap like the RS500.

the M3 on TG the other night looked good in matte grey, but as clarkson said you cant touch it without messing it up and you have to clean it lots!

plus its going to be a nightmare to match if you crash

Just picked up some halfords matte grey rattle cans. Colour match complete :D

Some cars look great in matte, others look horrible.
