But you spend a third of your life on it.

We've had a memory foam mattress for about 6yrs now. Paid about £300 off ebay. 8 inch deep top 4" high density memory foam.

We've always wondered whether a Tempur would be better but of not we've wasted £1500.
 
You don't need to spend all that for a decent mattress. The argument of spending a third of you life on it is just a sales pitch for the customer to justify paying vast amounts for slightly more luxurious padding and material.

You get what you pay for upto a point. A really cheap box spring mattress will be rubbish, but you can get pocket sprung mattresses fairly cheap now. Couple it with a decent mattress topper and it'll be great. If you are loaded and can afford to spend top dollar then fair enough, but it isn't a necessity and wont make a difference to your back etc.
 
Our current king size is memory foam. I read up on what makes a good memory foam mattress and then bought one on ebay. Cost about £120 a few years ago, still fine now and the most comfortable mattress we've ever had. Make of that what you will.

Hardly an argument most people do spend a third of their lives in bed.

I also ordered from factory beds well over 18 months ago, and can't praise them or the mattress enough. There is/was a massive thread over on MSE regarding them, and never heard anything but full praise.

The mattress was around £1000, but is amazing, far better than the £2-3k ones we had!

Got to agree with this.

I have a cheap(ish) Ikea mattress, and it's the most comfortable thing I've slept on. I hate those expensive ones where you feel like you're lying on a marshmallow!

Saying that, I periodically sleep on a duvet on the floor with no trouble, so I wouldn't say I'm particularly fussy :p

Have been a convert to wool since 2 beds ago.

These guys offer good advice and can talk you through requirements.

Wool has been a big turnaround for the wife and me - we both have different requirements (both in temperature and firmness) - Wool has met them.

I hear those memory foam ones get toasty and too warm in summer but see you can get half and half ones now also.

I reckon a good mattress is important for a good nights rest but only if your mind is peaceful too !
 
My double mattress cost me £50 off ebay nearly 2 years ago and done me fine. Although I agree it's not the best in the world where quality is concerned.

Slightly late to the party but there you go :

Buying a mattress is a highly subjective thing. I disagree that a 5 min lay down is "pointless". It is better than nothing and better than buying blind on numbers and features alone. If it isn't enough time to base a decision then shortlist based on 5 mins per mattress and then spent longer on those beds. You'll spend a good portion of your day on that thing - you may as well sacrifice a bit of time testing it!

I tried a good few mattresses from different stores and manufacturers and was mainly looking at a €1300 (Super King) one from King Koil as a favourite. However I then lay down on another mattress for 10 mins without looking at price or features and tried a few postures and loved it. It was €530. The KK was marginally better but I just couldn't justify the extra outlay - diminishing returns if you will.

Whereas I'm a bit of a feature-whore when buying most things and live for the spec sheet - in the end I closed my eyes as to whether it had 3000 micro pocket springs, , memory foam and gel grid, etc. I bought with my back.

We were in Ikea around the same time we were mattress shopping and when I saw the mattresses in there I initially scoffed at the idea. However, when trying them out, they were surprisingly good. We ended up getting something different but I'm sure we will consider them for guest beds etc.

Agreed although once you reach the higher realms - just like anything you reach highly diminishing returns. The most expensive ones we tried - whereas very well built using fine materials - they were far too soft and I wouldn't have considered them even if budget permitted.
