Mattresses - I need knowledge

I made a cheap bed comfortable for me by adding two cheap memory foam toppers. One wasn't enough. However when my back was at its worst, sleeping on my side with a firm pillow between my legs helped more than I expected. It alters the pelvis angle and can straighten things up nicely. I knew I'd had a good night's sleep if the pillow was still there in the morning.
 
So many to choose from. I don't fancy the ones that can get very warm. Is that the memory foam type?
 
Currently looking for a med/firm single mattress and possibly a new divan base for my son.
He's about 6'4" and 20 stone.

I dont want to spend more than £250 for the mattress and he likes a cool bed.

Any recommendations?


Can some kind person also explain this to me...
Is a 1000 pocket spring single the same as a 2000 spring double?
Sounds obvious but keep seeing 2000 spring singles but hardly ever see a 4000 spring double.

It’s generally based on the number of springs the mattress would have it were king size, so a 2000 single would have a lot less than 2000 springs, and a 2000 double would be nearer to having 2000 springs but not quite.

It needs to be single mattress. Cost? Not really sure but don't want to spend hundreds and hundreds on one.

As a 'bigger' guy, I get a lot of lower back pain and found I'd wake up with back aches prior to replacing my mattress - I'm a side sleeper but I don't know if that makes a difference.

I got the Dormeo Memory Plus and it's been a god send - no pains anymore and I wake up feeling a lot better now.

So as our mattress is 8.5 years old weve decided we need a new one. Im looking for king size and firm but other than that ive no idea what to look for with regard to matresses. I know theres amount of springs but not sure if 1 companies numbers can be compared to anothers. Any advice appreciated.

John Ryan are highly recommended on here, however I found there mattresses too firm and exacerbated my (and my partners) back ache.
We went to Benson for Beds who can put you on a bed that measures your pressure points and is supposed to work out which firmness is best for you.

I would take it with a pinch of salt though, as we both get back ache using the recommended soft mattress that we chose. :)

What do i need to look for in a mattress, this one we just bought as its our first house and we needed a bed, got it from yorkshire bed so no idea what type it is (i will try and remember to have a look tonight and see if its marked with a model tonight).

We have just ordered a John Ryan Artisan Naturals, does anyone here have one? Can you comment on how soft and comfortable it is?

the marketting budget are enormous nonetheless - simba (was it?) £250 per mattress - see earlier link.

There are so many of these market disruptive mattress-in-a-box companies, some have got to go to the wall ? getting a mattress from a company who may not be there in 5years does not seem a good idea;
although Simba/others? are selling in shops/Amazon (lol their 99% 5* reviews) to get into traditional selling.

Trying out in a shop you can decide in 10minutes whether it won't work and avoid hassle of home trials.

not 100% sure. it had either 1500 or 2000 springs, a latex or mem foam top and cost about £700/800

I've just had quick look on their site to see if I could remember which one it was, but I honestly can't.
I think we tried 2 from them as well, and they both ended up going back.
