Hi Folks,

I am trying to build my nephew a modest gaming rig, but my sister doesn't want "a bloody big box taking up space".

I also dont wish to pour a grand into my mephews new love for PC gaming right away.

I decided a nice AMD build is in order (im an intel fan boy so this rubs against my grain for sure).

I've noted that matx/itx is the smallest I'm getting, and wondered why i couldn't find an AM3= motherboard in the form factor.

I've made a few assumptions but heres what I've got so far.

Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9590 Blk Ed 4.70GHz
Radeon R9 380 G1 Gaming 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

On top of this will be a standard spinner SATA and an SSD for game installs, a case - which again I'm not sure on. Super Flower PSU and a cooler that fits the case.

I'm stumped for a Mother board and defer to your judgement.

Thanks

H

Personally I would at Intel, the AMD is high power cpu with a TDP of 220w, the Intel below will offer better performance, see the link below:

Done a rough build, but a cooler & psu is needed:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £488.61
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Hi Hudson,

AMD don't have any good ITX/MATX motherboards for such chips.

The 9590 is the same chip as the 8320 but overclocked.

I'd go with Intel MATX + locked i5 which will generally be faster than 9590 except in a few games that use more than four cores, and not by much. And it won't require an aftermarket cooler.

Don't buy any GPU just yet, wait for the RX 480 - http://www.anandtech.com/show/10389/amd-teases-radeon-rx-480-launching-june-29th-for-199

My basket at Overclockers UK:

With the RX 480, it should still be under £650, unless you also require Windows.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

I guess i'm sticking with Intel, hopefully the rrp of the rx480 is circa 200 quid.

Thanks again
