My friend has an old Core2 Socket 775 PC with a busted ATX motherboard. I need to know whether I need to buy and ATX motherboard again or whether I can simply get away with buying an mATX for the saving? Will it be backwards compatible with the case, processor, memory etc, asides from the fact there obviously wont be as many PCI slots and SATA ports?

Depends on the motherboard. There's nothing stopping you from using a mATX mobo, just make sure the ram is compatible etc.

I would reccomend getting a used mobo for S775 though, brand new ones are crap and very overpriced. You can get a high end board for the same money if you go for a used one.

Just to clarify, yes you can use a mATX mobo, as long as your memory is compatible, the CPU will be fine as long as the mobo supports it.

The only difference between the two sizes of motherboard is ATX has room for more expansion slots. ATX cases will take micro ATX motherboards no problem. Just check that all the bits are compatible with whichever board you choose.
