Looking at going to what should be a decent hotel in Mauritius for ~8 nights - LUX Le Morne. All inclusive over breakfast-only is +£500 per person. It seems that is likely worthwhile since I heard meals and drinks there are quite expensive.

Could anyone with some experience weigh in?

What do they mean by all inclusive? Inclusive of branded alcoholic drinks? Multiple restaurants or just one?

~ £55 per day for all drinks, lunch and dinner (AI is usually local spirits rather than branded, not that that matters)

Is that worth it to you?

I'd advise against all inclusive, unless you just want to get totally hammered everyight, which is a totally fine thing to want in my books (!).

It ties you in to eating and drinking at the hotel breakfast, lunch and dinner every day as well as the times that they are served.

I'd prefer to be able to eat at a different place each day and when I choose over potentially saving some cash... but, thats just me. If this is more of a resort or relax at the pool kind of holiday then it might be worth it.

I hate all inclusive, Id rather go explore and visit different places.

Unless you are drinking like a fish every day, its going to be cheaper to not be all inclusive.

Prices in restaurants are as much as you want to pay and not really expensive. From £6 to £60 per head for a meal.

if you go and eat out every night in 5 star hotels you will probably spend more than the all inclusive though.

The AI doesn't cover branded alcohol, but does cover some activities. All restaurants bar one are covered I think

We are planning to go out and about for two/three days, but mostly we plan to be by the beach. Neither of us are heavy drinkers, in fact wife is nearly T total.

id risk it then. AFter all you are already saying you wont use the AI 3 out of the 8 days so it really becomes £100 per day each. Thats a lot.

You'll get some better answers posting in the Mauritius Trip Advisor forum, some good locals in there with lots of experience.

You might want to go all-inclusive on that part of the island as it's quite quiet compared to the north of the island, but I'm going half board to Lux Grande Gaube in a few months because all-in means that I'll be wasting my money if I don't stay at the hotel for all meals.

I don't see the point unless you're going to float in alcohol for the duration. I'd rather eat/drink out and explore.

Go explore, supposed to be a beautiful place :) You don't want to be limited to just the hotel food (specially if it turns out rubbish).

As a born Mauritian, I would say that it really depends on whether you are happy eating outside the hotel or not.

I stay at hotels when I go back on holiday but only tend to eat dinner in hotels because they tend to do buffets in the evenings and I have never been disappointed.

A meal in a hotel will be around £20-£40 and an alcoholic drink under £10 i.e. whilst expensive, no more than say eating and drinking when out in London.

Eating outside the hotel is so much cheaper. Eating fast food or small reastaurants, meals will be under £10 a head and streetfood £1/2. Even nice restaurants, you would struggle to exceed £20 for a very good meal.

So in summary, all inclusive imo isn't worth it if you are happy eating out. Compromise would be to have dinner at hotel but eat out for lunch (half board).

Le Morne is gorgeous and probably near the most beautiful and scenic part of the island but as said, the North/North West is a bit more lively and has calmer seas for swimming. Beaches are similar down South but not really great for sea swimming.

It was 19 years ago when I went so can't really help other than to say that it's a fantastic country full of lovely people and is a real paradise.

Defiantly go with out the all inclusive then, sounds like you won't get your money's worth on it.

Have a nice holiday!

We have a team out in Mauritius and they are all, without even the slightest exception, lovely people. A couple of them have relocated over here with the company too and done really well. It rains a lot there so they probably feel right at home.

We hired a jeep when over there. Went for a drive, pulled over to ask a chap for directions and he got in and took us on a tour of the island! Turned out he worked at another hotel and had just finished his shift! He proceeded to invite us over to his hotel as his guest and filled our glasses all night and sorted dinner without a single charge!!!

The people are lovely, we stayed there for two weeks for our honeymoon and it was the biggest waste of money. In all honesty I prefer Cyprus. Better food, almost as friendly, better weather and a much better hotel for your money. It was cheap to eat and drink when we went there so didn't go AI. Apart from the locals it didn't live up to either of our expectations.

In fact from all the places we have ever holidayed it would be near the bottom if I rated them all.
