Our phone line comes into a really stupid place, and there's no ideal location for my modem, router and switch, so I'd like to move it.

Whats the max length I can run the dsl cable? I see some 20m ones online, but they're not shielded and the run would definitely be going past several mains cables.

Or I suppose the other option is to leave just the modem there and run an ethernet cable long distance to it.

Edit: sod it, whilst I'd rather the modem not by the phone socket I'll probably just do that.

+1 for hiding the modem as best you can near the phone socket and then patching it to the rest of your equipment elsewhere.

As for the shielded DSL cable idea, if you're worried you could consider fixing RJ11 and BT 431a (I believe it's called) connectors on to a length of STP.

You might find an RJ45 fits in the faceplate, then run that to the modem.
I have a network panel next to the faceplate which i loop a small network cable, i then plug the RJ11 DSL cable into the patch panel. Works perfectly.

I was told years ago that it was around 10m for a DSL cable run, I'd always prefer the Cat5 option as you've already stated though.
