If a game only supports a max res of say 1280 x 1024, whats the point of a monitor with a higher available resolution, surely you can't play at the higher res, only the lower one supported by the game?
The reason I ask is I'm thinking of going for the sammy 940BW screen with the 1440 x 900 res and it seems a bit of a waste of an upgrade if I'm limited to 1280 x 1024 ( the usual max in game res on games I've seen).
Do ppl here hack the game "ini" file to enable a higher in game resolution or am I missing summat here? :)
Sorry about the noobishness here btw.

The game will only show the max res of the monitor connected to the computer at that time. So say you have a 17" monitor @ 1280*1024 then the game will show all resolutions up to 1280*1024. If you had a 20" monitor @ 1600*1200 then it will show all resolutions up to that res.

So i'm guessing that you've only ever used 1280*1024 in which case it would look like to you that games only go up to 1280*1024. Am i correct?

In answer to your other question, some games don't support widescreen resolutions natively but as you said, there are 'hacks' which allow you to use custom resolutions. You can get the hacks from here as well as other information about widescreen gaming.

Thanks for info guys, I thought about it and realised I only had a max res of 1280 x 1024, but like you both said, the game dispalys the max res of the monitor being used.
I told you it was a noob question :p
thanks
