Just seen on a competitors web site, pre built systems that come with 8Gig of ram but with Vista Home Premium.

Am I misunderstanding something here or is this just a stupid waste of 5gig of ram?

If its 64bit Vista it is at least usable, not that a home user would ever utilise that much RAM, or even a quarter of it at the moment.

If its 32bit then its a total waste, the OS won't even see over half of the RAM.

No mention of it on the spec or options. just seems totally ridiculous to me.

It is, but people will buy it because it has more memory. Just like cheap video cards with a gig of VRAM. DDR2 is cheap, so bunging loads in a system to increase sales is probably going to work to some degree.
