Max Payne Series

I look back at Max Payne 1 with rose tinted glasses. I still do, as i can't get it to install under Vista :p

Gave Max Payne 2 a try, and lost interested after the first few levels :(

I would say they are definately worth a purchase (but thats because it's one of my favourite games :p). It has a fantastic atmosphere and at the time of its release it was a breath of fresh air.
I loved it because it was quite unique with the way the told the story, instead of using CGI or in game cutscenes, the story was presented as though it was a comic book with the characters all speaking their own lines.

If you do purchase them you will need play them in order otherwise you wouldn't have much of a clue who people were and what their motivations are, which would ruin the story (you wouldn't watch the Lord of the Rings Trilogy backwards would you?)

Just to add, AVOID the film :p going by both reviewers and gamers it is TERRIBLE :(

You won't hear half the game (Max Payne 1) in Vista because it uses sound files in a format Vista doesn't support thanks to it's rewritten audio stack. You will have to play it in XP if you want to enjoy the game properly.

Great games.

It's just a shame there isn't a third as it really needs this to finish the series. They are really short though and there are a couple of bits where you wonder why the hell they put it in but overall it's definately a 9/10 game.

Recently replayed through Max Payne 1 and am half way through 2 at the moment.

MP1 is still a fantastic game, loved every minute of it.

And yes, definitely play them in order. It's all about the story in this series.

Oh yeah, and the awesome slow mo gun fights! :D

Max Payne 2 graphics are still pretty decent with everything on high. That shouldn't put you off though as they are great games

How badly does this affect the game?

EDIT:

Theres a patch which fixes this apparently?

There is no official patch. Last time I looked, someone had provided the MAX-FX tools which allows you to extract the sound files from the game and then you have to recompress them as something Vista can play. I tried it once when Vista first came out but I wasn't totally satisfied with it.

Are there no XP computers you have access to? It doesn't even have to have a dedicated GPU. I've played the game perfectly fine with all options up on my Nan's laptop which only has an Intel 915 chip!! The game engine is quite old and runs very well these days on anything!

Max Payne 2 also doesn't support Widescreen aspect ratios, so although it works, Max appears as something of a fat dwarf. Your eyes adjust to it after a while though so it's not too noticable.

you can always force the game to run in window mode :)

for an game as old as this, you wont notice much in frame rate drop :P

dear god that brings back memorys..
that part just freaked me out, had to turn off the volume, the baby ****** me off.

The second one was more fun, great weapons and Havok physics - but the first one had a much better plot. It veered between hillarious parody and really gut-wrenching seriousness, kept you always off-balance.
