Afternoon lads/ladies,

Just installed Max Payne after craving to play it for ages but the resolution won't change for some reason. :(

I've already patched it to 1.05 and installed the community sound fix for Vista/Win 7 and all is well up until launching the game. I get a box pop up asking me for settings which i've configured for my monitor (1080p) but when it start up it looks like it's running at 640 x 480 and is horribly stretched across my 27" screen.

Any help will be appreciated, i've been wanting to play this game for ages and now that it's installed, I can't! :(

I had it running on my Mac a while back at 1920x1080... The menus and loading screens looked awful but in game it was OK. Is it in game that you're talking about?

Yeah. I get a little pop up box asking me what do I want to run the game at like resolution/AA/detail etc. and it seems to save the config but once you launch the game it just seems to default to a low resolution, both the menu screen and the game itself. I've had a look in the install folder but there isn't anything that I can change manually like a config file.

Cheers Kempster but it doesn't seem to be working unless i'm doing something wrong. :(

The default is:

Display Height - 438
Display Width - 780

And i've tried the following:

Display Height - 1080
Display Width - 1920

Hit OK once i've changed the values but it still runs at low res and the value changes back to the original one.

I bloody hope so, it's a 5970 which is more than capable of running Max Payne lol.

I'll have a wee go at changing to different resolutions, I assume i'm doing the reg edit correctly then?

OK so apparently the resolution changer thing on the game itself works yet the images still look like 640 x 480 even though I click on the properties of the picture and it says 1920 x 1080...

So it's basically like it's outputting at 1920 x 1080 yet the image quality looks low res and stretched, wtf.

Here's some images. I don't know if my eyesight is going or something but these don't look proper to me:

Look at the size of the mouse cursor ffs!

Was taken from the steam forums

The best resolution for looks is a 4:3 one, other ratio's can be chosen but are not scaled properly. So use 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, 1400x1050, 1600x1200, 2048x1536.

If you have a widescreen 16:9 or 16:10 it's best to select the 4:3 reso that has a matching number of vertical lines, for example you have a 24" lcd monitor with 1900x1200 reso, then you best pick 1600x1200 for playing. You will have black borders left and right, but at least the aspect is okay.

Be sure to also check the scaling settings of your display driver and monitor, from what you describe you are seeing, it seems scaling is somehow disabled. you can set your display driver to automatically scale the image up to full size, albeit without improving the resolution. Some monitors have similar options build in.

/any res for 16:9 ? 1280x720, 1600x900, 1920x1080?
either use native, or the 4:3 one with closest number of vertical lines... for 1080 you could use 1440x1080 to get 4:3 one I suppose...

maybe some more help to you,

Max Payne 1&2 does suffer from stretching at widescreen resolutions, a limitation of the game engine itself unfortunately.

Have you checked in your graphics card options to see if you have a scaling option for resolutions lower than the displays native resolution?, if so, set it to disabled and try the game again.
If the game starts as a little window in the middle of the screen you know the settings aren't sticking, if it goes fullscreen then all is fine and you can restore the scaling option back to default.
[edit]Grrf, too slow.. :) [/edit]

2nd edit: Kempster, if scaling was off and the game was reverting to 640x480 surely it'd appear as a small window in the middle of the screen? something which the OP has not stated.

No help but I recently played these again and they are awesome games. Forgot how great they were.

All I have installed is just the display driver from AMD, not CCC or anything else as I do over clocking through MSi Afterburner and change AA/AF settings in game so i've never needed to install it. The game fills the whole screen like in the screenshots and i'm not playing it windowed, looks like there's not going to be a fix for this then. :(
