Max safe laptop temp

Hi,

I have an HP Pavilion DV5 special edition laptop with an T9400 CPU running at 2.5GHz.

I was playing TF2 on it last night and felt the underside and it was burning hot. Checked coretemp and it was running at around 70c. This is much more toasty than the temps I'm used to on my desktop due to the power of cooling available.

What is the max safe temp of this CPU? How far would you let it go before you let it cool down? I feel a bit uneasy letting it reach 70c, but if that is normal...

I'm getting an Akasa notebook cooler on Friday though.

Cheers

70c is OK - bear in mind the cooling in a laptop is much less effective than in a desktop.

A notebook cooler is definitely a good idea though - until then, you could raise the back of the laptop off the desk with a book so air can get underneath :)

I had a DV5-1010ea which had a P7350@2GHz and a 9600M GT

The CPU maxed at 85 degC and the GPU hit 106 degC after 2 hours of silent hunter 4. Needless to say I took it back and will get a new one tomorrow. Check your GPU temp thou!

70 is fine dude! Find your processor on the Intel website and find its thermal specification. The P7350 is 90 degC max afaik, the T9400 will be very similar!

Could try using SpeedFan to see if it will allow fan control, although in my experience it doesn't work on notebooks. There's a Dell-specific program which allows for fan speeds to be forced (called i8kfangui), so you could google around and see if there's an HP equivalent.

i've got a DV7 nd that gets quite hot too.. cheapest solution for me was to find something to wedge it up, like a calculator... or a small book/box :P that dropped the temps down loads
