Max temp to stay within safety limit?

Ok guys my new build is going nicely and its time to start overclocking it a bit. I want to push the i5 2500k up to 4.4Ghz to start with.
I am using a silver arrow cooler and what i would like to know is what is the maximum temp tolerance while remaining completely safe can the i5 2500k take?

With a SB anything upto 75 at full stress is fine (i.e. IBT, prime small fft) - but ideally you would want it under or as close to 70 as possibe (Note that it will run happily up to 80 it's just not advisible)

However, with the Silver Arrow strapped on the SB you should be looking at sub 60 temps at 4.4GHz - with decent airflow thorugh the case (probably even without.)

If they're higher then you either have to much vCore, a poorly fitted HS (too much gunk or poor contact) or you have a very hot CPU/case.

i thought 98c was MAX TJ Core Temp, and it is recommended to be atleast 15c from that, so anything up to 83c is considered 'ok' whilst stressing, but ideally like plec said, as close 70c as pos to allow for hot days. mine primes @ 80-85c but in normal usage doesnt go over 64-67c so its well within the 15c limit.

Thats about right yes, would like to see lower prime temps as theoretically some software can push it as hard as that. As for 60C stressed under Linx (W7 SP1 and AVX support) or prime, thats not really happening on an air cooled rig at any decent overclock, even stock speed lol, unless you've got some screaming fans and max case cooling.. ideally in another room from where the monitor is lol.

I would have agreed with this, and probably written the same thing 2 weeks ago - but since i've installed my SA my data/info has changed.

I know i've got a little gem of a chip (so my results may be a bit of an exception to the rule) but my average temps are 57 degrees under load - prime 95 (small fft).

This is in a Lian Li PC-7 case with a 14cm front fan and a 12cm exhaust - and the machine is still very quiet (in comparison to the AKASA Freedom Tower i had strapped to the SB before).

I realise you do scores of builds so if your results/findings are vastly different, then my chip may be an anomoly (see sig). But i've read similar reports/findings across the forums - although some of these may be running blend tests and not small ffts.

EDIT: And that's with one of the HS fans only running at 50% - as it's not hit the 60 degree threshhold for bumping up the fan to 100% speed.

ive had the temps running to top end of the 80's they will run fine with that, 70c max is silly even the stock coolers go over that in warm weather
