In XP, everything is fine... I have an asus 4890 connected to a 37" hdtv via hdmi and vga. I use the max available vgla res of 1380x768 which is perfect, however, this res is not available in windows 7. In fact, there are no widescreen res available over vga...

Ive tried HDMI, on 3 different TVs, and always find the image quality for desktop work is poor... the clarity of vga is much sharper, and easier to read. I only have the option of either hdmi or vga...

Is there a way to force a vga res, or edit an inf or something???

you know, it's likely that the native resolution of your TV is actually only 1366x768 - that's not an uncommon TV resolution.

Yes I know, thats why Im wondering why I can only get 1280x1024 over vga in windows 7, yet xp lets me set the max as you quoted...

You should be able to force most resolutions through CCC under Desktop Properties, give that a shot.

Ive hunted everywhere in ccc, no matter where I look, the max is 1280x1024!!!!

It's probably not picking up your screen properly - vista can't pick up 1680 over vga on my 22", but picks it up automatically over dvi. You'll need to find a driver somewhere I expect.

If HDMI doesn't look good you're doing something wrong. You'll need to set the video mode to 1:1 pixel mapping as the picture is probably overscanning. Try changing the video format on the tv (a button on the remote). What model is the tv?

Between VGA and DVI/HDMI, I would see no reason why you would ever want vga?

^DVI is limited to 60hz (barring dual-DVI obviously) whereas VGA can do higher. Probably not all that relevant when connecting to a TV, but still one advantage VGA has over DVI in general.

Make a custom res in the CCC.

Had this issue so many times with various games and operating systems not having my HDTV's res of 1366x768 by default so in the end got rid of it and got a 'proper' monitor that does a 'proper' res. Alll good now running at 1920x1200 in Windows 7.

I have 3 differnet tvs, on all of hem the hdmi picture is no where as sharp as the vga.. from researching, in several av forums.. many people suggest it is the post processing that the tv does in an attempt to "improve" video performance, which Im sure it does, but this has an adverse effect on a static desktop, and text clarity can suffer... You cant turn this off, and Ive gone through every setting imaginable in an attempt to improve the qualtiy, without success... VGA is crisp, and vibrant, and hdmi is a little fuzzy, dont get me wrong, its not unusable, but just not as sharp as vga...

I will try the custom res, but doubt I can set anything larger than what is being detected.. I suspect a win7 & cat driver isssue, as xp is fine...
