Hi all

I moved my servers into my loft and well i went up there the other day and yes of course it gets rather warm up there. I have an N54L and a lenovo ts140 as well as a backup synology box. I dont work them hard and mainly used for backup and streaming but with ambients of high 30's up there is this going to cause any problems? ideally i like them up there as they are out the way.

Hmm that's quite on the high side for small scale servers, rack mounted 1-6U servers wouldn't be too bad at this temp as cooling policies would dictate fans running at max speed and having more air flowing over the components. For the small scale servers, not so much.

Ultimately it would depend on how hard they're being worked. Set up some alert monitoring so you get notified of high temps, and an auto-shutdown when reaching a max limit.

I have 2 servers rack mounted in the Attic. Like you, there many used for streaming and weekly backups so they never get a hard time and been running fine for the passed 3 years for 24/7 use. Surge protector for added protection I would recommend (If not already).

With the degree of temperature fluctuations throughout the year (hot and cold) you will reduce the life expectancy so expect that and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry to much, HDD's especially can take the heat.

Some of the more recent Dell servers are allegedly happy to sit at an ambient of 45C but that's a special option.

I would expect to see issues running kit in the loft at the temperature you have.
