Maximum Cable length between Modem and Router

I've got a Virgin Media Cable modem and a wireless router. What's the longest length permitted when connecting these two together?

I've used a 10m cable and been having problems with accessing the internet. Using a 1m cable works fine. Unfortunately I need to place the router at the other end of the room, hence getting a 10m cable. I can get a 5m cable, but I wanted to ensure the maximum length allowed.

Cat5e should stretch to around 100m without loss. Sounds like you have a cheap / dodgy cable.
