Hi folks,

Does anyone know the MAXIMUM temperature that each core on a Q6600 can safely reach before it'll start to cause problems?

I've searched and searched but found nothing to tell me a straight answer.

Well on the box that came with the processor should tell you. Should be arround 65 *C, but you could prob go a bit higher (I do). I stop overclocking mine when it reaches 70 *C

is that the CPU temp you're talking about or the core temp?

the cpu temp is 71oC max, but not the core temps.......

71c is the max Tc temperature which i believe is read from a sensor on the topside of the IHS... now the actual cores can tolerate temperatures higher than this but it is common to hear people say no higher that 70c under primeload..

you have to consider that it is not only temperature that can cause damage but also voltage... a stock running Q6600 on say a fanless setup that hits 80/90c now and then probably wont cause any damage... the processor itself has built in thermal protection to slow down at the point it is getting to hot (Tjuntion Max I believe its normally called) which is around 100c give or take... where as I wouldnt fell happy run a Q6600 at 80c 24/7 running 1.5v through it...

So my answer would be 70/75c max core temperatures during primeload if you are overclocking.. Unless its fully loaded 24/7 i.e. folding, it will never get that hot during normal day to day use
