I'm a light gamer nowadays for pc(console mainly) so I only play old games designed windows xp and earlier with the exception of games on steam, still don't play too high end, mainly the free ones once I can download them as my Internet is weak upstairs, but one game I'm interested in trying Path of Exile.

I first tried an old ati radeon x1800xl from an old machine I recently picked up and failed to load dx as too old lol, I've now got my original card back in but not had time to play.

I'm slowly trying to build a decent gaming rig.

Current spec:

Hp ipibl-la lga 775
C2D E6550
4gb ddr2 ram
Geforce 8400gs 512mb DX11

Powered buy a brand new corsair cx 430w(not changing this)

I keep eying up the gt610, Hd5450, radeon r7 240 2gb ddr3, but reading these don't offer much in the way to replace my 8400.

Any suggestions on best for what I got and to further down the line go onto an Asus H81 m-plus and either a G3220/G3### or i3??.

Depends on what your budget is?

A good 2nd hand 7950 for about 80 pounds would be perfect.

Nope that card would get bottle necked hard with his system. He's got a old core 2 duo so its a old 2 core cpu that runs at 2.33Ghz

I'm afraid with your current set up you wont be able to upgrade to a much better gpu as your very cpu bound.

I remember when i tested my ATi 4890 in a AMD FX 4100 system then tested it in my Intel system there was about a good 25% better performance hit in games. So this was clear the FX4100 cpu was bottlenecking my gpu in games which were more cpu intensive, and this AMD cpu is better than your current one i'm afraid so a 7950 GPU which is better than a ATi 4890 would deffo get bottlenecked hard.

Your looking at upgrading most of your system if you want to light game. To either something AMD budget wise or a i3 system down the Intel line!

To show the age of your system your still running DDR2, DDR 4 is here now lol.

No budget as in 'as I go a long' like, I'm in the process of selling some computer bits, not quite as much as that card you suggested, but a 'put towards amount'.

See I've never had a proper gaming computer, closest I got was an acer aspire laptop with i5, 4gb ram, hdradeon dedicated graphics lol, I used to be into wow and world of tanks and Eve and similar, but not had the time in awhile, but I be very interested in world of tanks again :).

Edit: this hp board supports Q6600 and 8gb ram, would it be worth spending on that along with gpu or just gpu then buy new mobo?

Thanks for replies. I'm 29 but I love my old school gaming, if I get a new pc game it be sims 4 otherwise I'll be sticking to the likes of Team fortress and the like on free steam.

I know my system is old, got the empty compaq case in room lol. I do however have a msi rd480 neo2 and Asus A8N Sli-Deluxe board not being used, but 939 probably be no better even with.crossfire I bet?

So you do have a budget, or no? You mean you want to spend less than £80?

At this moment in time id rather spend less than 80 on a gpu if it means not being.wasted on my current system.

I'm looking at the Asus h81 m plus board and possibly G3220 as upgrade, simply because the board is up for 50 and I can get it less and don't want to.spend to much on a light gamer.

Fastest card I ran in my C2D was an AMD 4850. Swapped that for a 5850, but the CPU bottlenecked the card in most titles.

So that or a 5770 is about as high as I'd go. Assuming the PSU is up to it a 4850 would be a decent option and they're typically worth around £20 nowadays. It's massively quicker than the 8400GS.

there was a guy on here a while ago that tried to upgrade a gpu in an hp machine to a gtx 750ti (nice mid rage cheapish card that will run on pretty much any psu) and the hp motherboard didnt accept it, seems they black list certain cards, or do something funky to make certain cards not work! so before you upgrade might want to do some research to see if the card will actually work.

good advice. I'd be suprised if that couldnt pwn path of exile... Its a diablo 2 clone after all. deffo worth an upgrade of some sort. the 8400 is pretty weak compared to a C2D.

Ironically 3/4 months ago I had an HD4550(or 60), 7900gt and 9600gt, first.2 from spare or repairs old gaming computers(Amd dual cores 939 crossfires), but at the time I.was using an old Agp tower I picked up for a.fiver lol, so sold the hd and gave away the rig as I.couldn't fix in, then the.2nd one I swapped the 7900 for 9600 which i then sold due to the whole gaming parts failed, but i did get to try the cards out for a moment and was somewhat impressed.

Maybe try one of.them again? Or too old nowadays?

Thanks.guys.. The system I have minus the psu.and gaming case is how I got it, sold 8500gt cards around same time too.

Corsair cx range I.read isn't the high end of.models but it was in sale.and I know they of.good quality especially being '80 plus bronze ' and on the box it says 384w on the +12 which is what gpu cards seem to go by(if it's displayed)

I run an Athlon x2 270, which is approx equivalent to an E7600, and a gtx 560ti. It's pretty well balanced in the games I play (mostly older stuff, or indie games).

560ti costs about £45 used. Wouldn't go more powerful than that, really. It's fine with my 400w PSU.

Would then E6700 fair any better or just as limited? Only ask because I brought a box of old bits off someone and one of cool items was a used, but boxed 6700 with Heatsink and fan which i thought was pretty cool.

Oh by the way I have an HP S2031A monitor that I picked up cheap few months ago and don't plan to change it till I can afford an Hd version and the resolution I'm using is native 1600x900 which looks hd lol.
