maximum vcore with e2180 stock cooling

i'm trying for 3.2ghz (400x8) with my e2180 and have got to 1.45v so far and it still BSODs the moment i start prime95 small ffts. i'm guessing i don't want to be going any further?? i guess i'll have to settle for a lesser clock.... :( :p

i'm totally new to this c2d clocking malarkey so can somebody just check over my settings.

specs:
gigabyte p35-ds3l (rev2, f7 bios)
ocz 4gb 2x2gb pc6400 gold kit
e2180 retail
corsair hx 520w
vista home premium 64bit

settings
ddr2 voltage +0.4v (2.2v)
ram at auto timings
fsb voltage +0.1v
mch voltage +0.1v

is there anything i have missed? or am i just expecting too much from the stock cooler? :)

Have you tried 320x10 ? Seems odd to buy a chip with a higher multy than an E2140 then run it at E2140 settings imo.

i got it from ocuk and they don't have the e2140. and it was only £2.35 more than the 2160..... :p

and i thought i might as well run at 400 to keep in sync with the ram. currently testing 400x6 just to rule out any problems with the ram/board.

edit: just tried 1.5v and the temps went upto 82c :eek:

i might try the 320x10 later but i'm now testing 9x333=3ghz with 5:6 ratio so ram is at 400. :)

this is only a stop gap till i get a quad anyway. :p

Shouldn't need much more than 1.425v in BIOS for 3.2ghz.

Tho the E2*00 range vary widely when it comes to overclocking.
 
You will almost certainly need an aftermarket cooler to get to 1.5v+ I have an e2160 400x8 (3.2GHz) @ 1.575v. Any less voltage than that and it BSODs after some time on Orthos. Anything higher than 3.2GHZ and i get BSOD even going up to 1.6v and unfortunately the next step on my DS3R is 1.8v, who's idea that was i dont know :mad:

Some chips u just get lucky with and they clock with very low voltage, others need more power.
 
well touch wood, i'm 90 minutes into 3ghz testing with 1.4v set in the bios (it droops A LOT in windows) and if i can leave it all night at these settings, i'll be happy enough. seems odd i couldn't get another 200mhz with an extra .1v though.

is 1.575v safe for 24/7 use?
 
well i notice creed is running a tuniq tower. i'd still have thought 1.575v is a lot for just air -even if it is highend air. :p

i have much to learn. :D

In Orthos max temp in coretemp and speedfan is 67ºC (max safe operating temp is 73ºC i believe) in game it only reaches 55ºC so i think it's fine :) Stangley whether the tuniq fan is on full or half speed there is no temp difference.

i had mine running at 85c earlier. :D i fudged the installation of the heatsink and was getting idle temps of 50c and under load it went to 85c before the throttling kicked in by reducing the voltage and multi. :o

it's my first build for over 2 years. i guess i'm a little rusty. :D
