Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble here but I'll lay this out neatly in hopes of making it more clear.

1. There are two SATA controllers in this board, the Intel one and the JMicro one, am I right?

2.(a) Are the SATA ports connected to the different controllers? (my guess: they're all connected to both controllers)
(b) If they are connected to both controllers, how do you set which controller controls which drive? Does that even matter?

3. If I want to run a RAID 0 (of two drives), a single SATA hard drive and a single SATA DVD drive, do both controllers need to be enabled? I'm not using any IDE drives at all.

4. I've heard there's some sort of fundamental flaw with the intel matrix storage controller and XP, anyone got a workaround? I'm sure there's bound to be people out there with similar setups.

5.(a) Is it worth fiddling with AHCI mode?
(b) Can you still enable a RAID with AHCI enabled?

Basically the problem I'm having is the XP installer blue screening at "Setup is starting windows" with an 0x7B error... I've obtained a hotfix from Microsoft and will try it shortly, but in the mean time, can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance.

I *think* that all the SATA ports are Intel ports and that ASUS haven't taken up the option of the extra two JMicron ports with that board. They do use the JMicron controller for the IDE controller.

Ah, so the JMicron controller can be turned off if I'm not using IDE drives?

Thanks for the reply, I'll keep messing, I'm about to try the hotfix'd XP install.

UPDATE: No luck with the hotfix, now the board can't actually detect any SATA cd/dvd drives... It's getting stuck at "DET IDE" which I assume means "detecting IDE devices" according to the LCD poster, but why would it be detecting IDE devices if there are none to detect and the controller is disabled??

UPDATE2: With a bit of messing, it's now seeing the drive again, but the windows installer isn't finding any drives, I have the floppy made up but which option do I choose? I mean there's like 20 entries in there, if I choose any one of them then choose another it says it already has a driver for it etc. (because they're the same thing?)

I dunno, I'm on the verge of sending this thing back, I've never had so much trouble with a build... My Crosshair setup was flawless, just plugged it all in and it worked, my gigabyte K8VT800 pro(along with a friend's who chose the same board) setup the same, my ECS kv2 extreme, the same, my friend's M2N32 SLi deluxe, the same, etc etc...

UPDATE3: I'm now looking at the XP desktop, nothing more to report...

There's a lesson in this story, if at first you don't succeed, whinge on forums while trying different hardware until it works.

Hi, there is a third lesson, research forums before you install, would have saved you a lot of time ;)

Heh, but my point was, I didn't actually get any help from the forum, all I did was whinge about it until I found something that worked. :P
