Maximus Formula - noisy & sound card probs

Recently did a new build build with this board and a Vista home premium OEM install.

All working fine except I can't get the sound card that came with the board to work and the mobo seems to be making a rattling sound when the Hard Drive (500 gig Western Digital AAKS) comes under load. Pretty sure the noise is not hard drive related as I have swapped out a similar drive (thinking it was the hard drive making the noise) before doing a fresh Vista install on new drive. I notice that it occurs when the sata LED is flickering when under load - it is significantly audible! Wondering if this is common for the board but suspect something is wrong and RMA may be required.

The sound card that came with the board is also proving to be a problem. Vista detected it and attached a generic driver which worked ok. However, when I installed the mobo driver (including Soundmax driver) the sound disappeared and device manager does not recognise a sound system in the pc. Again, anybody have similar experience? I have downloaded the latest sound driver through the Asus site and tried this but on installing, I get an error message saying something along the lines of no sound system detected. I currently have sound after uninstalling the soundmax driver and letting Vista attach a generic one but not happy with this solution.

Final question ;) - If I RMA the board due to this more or less constant rattle (as stated, it's not HDD, OD or fan spinning up related), will Overclockers provide me with a new Vista OEM operating system as I'm sure I've read that the OEM product attaches itself to the mobo and won't allow a fresh install on a different mobo??

Thanks in advance all :)

I have the Maximus formula, haven't had any issues with noise from the actual board itself, though. I haven't tried the onboard sound so I can't suggest anything, sorry, I'm not using Vista either...

As for the OEM software, I'd be surprised if they do give you a new one. If you have problems reactivating, you can always phone Microsoft, explain that the board broke and they'll let you reactivate up to a certain number of times, I think it's 5 but don't quote me on that.

On my maximus the sound was terrible too, [id describe lots background noise crackle, but only when is use in XP and Vista] but i finally got around to buying a proper sound card which i should on done along time ago

Didn't have any problem with drivers installing, cant help there, sorry

Don't worry about your vista oem if you get another mobo [as long as its a retail oem ie like this] your be fine

I've activated my vista on 3 different mothers, no problems

Hi, I assume that you have the card in the correct slot? The topmost one near to the NB chipset cooler. The sound quality from this card is pretty good and I experience no noises from it.....
