Maxing out VRAM

Hi,
I'm currently getting into 3d and with that of course rendering.
IRAY is my current render of choice.
If textures max out VRAM the render switches to CPU instead of continuing GPU based rendering.
I'm currently using a 660ti with 2GB VRAM.

Looking at GPUZ i'm getting into 1950mb territory but never been into the 2GB but my IRAY switches into CPU rendering 80 percent of the time which is frustrating and slow.

I'm unsure if GPUZ is giving me correct readings or if something else is going on.
GPUZ also says my card has no physics but I know it has and the latest drivers are installed for it.

Is there another decent monitoring app about that I can use to double check.

I think I might buy a GTX 970 but i'm unsure weather that will be enough with its 3.5gb + 500mb slower VRAM as i'm unsure how much i'm really using at the moment.

I'm hoping to try and hold out for pascal before I spend the kind of 980ti /titan money if I can.
