May be in trouble at work

lol what a load of ****

what if you had plans that you'd made that evening? what if your bus/train leaves at quarter past the hour?

I'd understand if it was your career but it's a part time job for minimum wage (or close to it).

And finally, if everyone has to stay 15 minutes after their shifts that is due to poor management. Your manager should organise their staff more efficiently and make sure that everyone leaves work when their shift ends.

I only ever stay late if something I should have done isn't done yet. seems like you weren't done with your jobs, so you should've stayed.

So what if the jobs not done? As long as he wasn't slacking off during the day then he's obviously been given unrealistic targets. It's down to poor management.

As it turns out a couple of people did miss their busses and had to wait an hour  for the next one.

And yeah, poor management: the work would have been done during the the day had we more staff. We did have more staff, 9 christmas temps who were let off a couple of weeks ago (some had only been working for a week!). EVERYONE in the store is outraged by this.

have you ever visited the real world? sometimes these things just have to be done.

also, how happy would you be if you saw 2 members of your team slacking off early when they could be helping. sometimes it's not about being a team player, it's just about not being an ass

To quote Eric Cartman, this is the line you need to take:

left in charge of the store for the evening - told everyone we couldnt go home until the shop is tidy. to which i reply "or until 8 oclock of course. I'm not staying after 8."

Come 8 O'clock and everyone is still working but me and 2 other guys go and sign out and sit in the staffroom (doors are locked so we couldnt get out). This manageress comes in and starts having a go at us! I told her that we finished at 8 and she's not allowed to make us keep working like that. So she said I'd have to take it up with the senior manager (the head honcho)

Was this to be paid or unpaid? This manageress has got an absolute cheek. I'd make a complaint about her to be honest.

a) verbal harassement
b) forcibly held against your will
c) Attempt to exploit yourself and other workers

:D

Come 8 oclock did you ask to be let out? If you did and she said no - then i'd do them. You're being forcibly held against your will.

A lot of ppl will be sheep and do it and the managers know this which is why they think they can get away with exploiting people like this.
So do not feel guilty or think you were in the wrong SHE was in the wrong and if she was an effective manager this sort of situation would not have arisen in the first place (shop would have been tidy before end of shift basically and if it isnt then they need more staff or better organisation)

Thankyou. I realise in a real industry that being part of a team is important. I'm probably going to be a game developer so I'll have to put ina lot of work to projects and probably not even get paid to do some of it. Its an important job.

Good, don't underestimate how much extra you will be expected to do in the games industry, most will have you sign out of the Working Time Directive anyway and several will expect you to put in extra hours when you get near to milestone dates. You are relatively well paid but it is a pretty hard job in terms of time it seems, rewarding though apparantly from what my mates say. :)

Do you have people working under you? Also the OP was not slacking off early. Where did you get that impression?

This is getting quite good we have the people who actually have a career tellign people in part time work that "you should go above and beyond"

You do realise that regardless of how above and beyond you go it will never get noticed and the manager will get the praise for "being a good manager", if it was my career we were talking about staying an extra 15min then i would say thats ok, for example, its sunday im at work now and im not being paid to be here but I have to get work done, this isnt from slacking off its just due to circumstances of comments coming back from warrenty surveyors, this helps my career so you can see why I would work these hrs. Also I was here yesterday aswell.

But ffs the OP is doing 4hrs in TKMaxx its hardly a career move now is it, I think you did the right thing, the manager should have asked you to stay later if needed (and offered pay for time/time in lui), some people are walk overs and get mixed up with the "real world" and actual part time work which is being managed by retards.

KaHn

If you didn't want to do the extra, you should have just said you had to be somewhere or had plans. There aren't many places to work where you can always finish on time, except maybe for councils/civil servants.

I work part time for a pretty huge clothing retailer. I was working yesterday, my usual 4 hour shift, finishing at 8pm, the same as everyone else, an hour after the shop closed (time to tidy up and all that). Now at about 7:30pm the "secondary manager" or whatever - left in charge of the store for the evening - told everyone we couldnt go home until the shop is tidy. to which i reply "or until 8 oclock of course. I'm not staying after 8."

Come 8 O'clock and everyone is still working but me and 2 other guys go and sign out and sit in the staffroom (doors are locked so we couldnt get out). They've got nothing on me right? It even says in the staff handbook that we're not supposed to work after our shift ends.

You fail at life.

I'm a Supervisor in a clothing/equipment store and if you pulled that attitude with me I would be disgusted. We close at 10:00pm at night and often we have to work a little bit over that to finish things. Sometimes the store gets trashed - you can't always plan for these things. What you did has nothing to do with being a "team player" - it's just basic common sense and respect for everybody else.

If it is not in the contracted hours, then they can not force you to work it. You can take them to the courts for unfair dismissal if they try anything stupid.

Lower management at those types of stores are usually petty jobsworths who are upset about not getting further in life. Good on you for not folding to them.

Im always working unpaid hours because I care about the job and it needs doing correctly. I do this off my own back and nobody asks me to do it.

However asking you to work extra (for what appears to be for no pay and immiediate notice) and getting annoyed at you is taking the **** and i'd refuse on principle.

If they expect you to work over... they obviously need the staff to work longer and should contract and pay accordingly.
