Hi everyone,

I may require another lens with more reach, although I don't know how to go about it. I have the following equipment:

Canon EOS 300 (I wouldn't mind replacing at some point) that has a 28-80mm lens for it.

Minolta 7000 with the following lenses: 35-105mm wide-medium telephoto, 50mm prime, 70-210mm medium-telephoto.

So I have these two systems but I know the Minolta one is out of date...the Canon one is really cheap and nasty. I don't have all that much money to spend, so I'm wondering whether I should buy a Minolta lens or maybe get that Sigma 75-300 and use it on the Canon.

Hmm, interesting - that might be an option - although I may have problems setting the aperture size - my Minolta 7000 and Canon bodies will only set the Aperture size with a lens attached, although will quite happilly set the shutter speed, and I'm wondering whether that may be an issue with an M42 system?

PS. Using an M42 adapter will mean a lot of hassle in terms of focus, stopping down, metering and then making the actual exposure. Exact details of this delicate process is available commonly - I was put off using a non-CPU lens straight away.

The 70-300 may be worth a look yeah, I will keep that in mind!

As for the M42 business...I heard it's a laborious business - although I think the lenses themselves have rings on them I can step down the aperture with, or step up - not sure if it's worth all the hassle, I will have to think about that one.

Cheers for the help people, it is a right PITA really! The Minolta values are also going up too - like you said spell. I have decided that I may pick up two lenses - a telephoto for the Canon and a telephoto for the Minolta on that auction website and see how that all goes.

I don't know if I should sell the 70-210mm since that is quite rare and isn't made anymore although the teleconverter may be a good option, if I get a 1.4x teleconverter, I will have a 98-294 lens, that will do f/5.6 If I get a 2x teleconverter it will be a 140-420mm lens, f/6.5 or something.

I will be replacing the EOS 300 anyway, and the 28-80mm on it, as they're both cheap...they do an okay job, but the lens can at times, suffer a major CA problem although I haven't noticed vignetting yet.

edit: Maybe I should think about selling all my Minolta equipment at some point too, and using that to finance a Canon setup.

Also, it's going to set me back around £1500 to go the Canon route too - that's for a 70-200 L, 2x Teleconverter, EOS 30V body, EOS 350D body! :eek: I haven't even put a wide-standard in there yet (since I don't use wide-standard much anyway)

Its quite a large section of track open though so I'd say buy or rent the longest you can afford and see what happens. Plenty more events throughout the year though so don't rush into things.

I'm thinking the 70-210 may be good enough, but well, I'll have to see what happens! I am counting on the auctions to stay within my budget...if they don't, I most certainly will have to go without a longer lens and hope I can get a good spot somewhere!

As for renting, that may also be an option - depending on where I go and how much it comes to, although if my Canon EOS 300 is as faulty as I think it is, it may not be an idea to rent at all as I would have wasted a film roll!

Its rather soft due to the lens being past its best range & my dodgy panning technique (car was moving a bit quick ) but it gives you an idea of the reach you get at 300mm (480mm effective on the 300D).

Almost forgot it is a 100% crop :)

Makes me want a digital body even more...if only I had the money though! :(

But yeah, if that's 480mm, well, I'm not going to get that much reach on anything I put on my Minolta. At the moment I have my eyes on a 400mm prime (which looks like I may lose), a 100-300mmm, Minolta fit, and a couple of 75-300mms on Canon fit.

I know your pain :(

Sometimes my 70-210 won't reach. On the odd occasion I bring just my 28-80mm lens and Canon body, and then I kick myself because the 28-80 is just too short!

Ah right, well, I guess I'll just have to see when I go there! Hopefully I will have a 100-300mm, or something similar before then for my Minolta or Canon body!

It looks like I will be selling my EOS 300 anyway, it's fairly capable...but I want something better. Then I can put any money I get from that towards a 30V and a good lens for it :)
