Maybe a silly question

My son has just inherited a PC with a socket 775 MSI motherboard, I have looked up the spec and it takes max 2gb of DDR2 667Mhz RAM.

It currently has 1 stick of 1Gb 533Mhz RAM.

I want to add 1 further stick of 1Gb RAM, I am assuming this will be a huge increase in performance........the Op System in Windows XP.

My question is I know memory just runs slower when needed but is there any restrictions.....could I buy this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813 or even faster memory and it will work with his current memory.

All opinions welcome!

Shouldn't be a problem, that new stick you linked will just be downclocked to 667 or whatever the board tells it to run at. RAM compatibility is usually much less of an issue than people think, as long as it's the same physical type and RAM generation. :)

Thanks I thought that this was the case.

So does anyone else believe that the 1Gb to 2Gb increase will not make a noticeable improvement?

My issue is whilst its only circa £13 purchase......I am guessing within a few months this machine will be replaced!

Depends a bit on the rest of the system of course, but generally with XP, I think the benefit would mostly be seen in games. More RAM is always good though, putting more of the OS in RAM and less of it in the pagefile.

If you're going to replace the machine anyway, I'm not so sure. Seeing as it's only £13, I'd say why not. Up to you though. :)

Thats what I think for £13.

I am sure I can always find someone in the family with an older machine who would like an extra 1Gb.

Again cheers.

Definitely a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you in the habit of having multiple windows open.
