Does overclocking have any effect on the life span of the cpu. slate me if you will but its something thats never crossed my mind untill seriously looking into getting a kick ass gaming pc, always been happy with run of the mill pcs at stock speeds till now, cheers ppls

It can do, particularly if you have to increase the voltage or end up with higher temperatures. Saying that though it will still generally outlast it's usefulness if you're the kind of person that upgrades every few years anyway.
The disadvantage may be that if you've been running it at a high clock for a long time then it may not have as much resale value if you wanted to sell it on.

They will last many years at stock voltages (I guess 100 maybe even), so upping the clock/voltage won't have much effect I'm guessing...

If it lasts 6+ years it's done well I say, a much faster one will be out then :).

I think i read some where, for the life of me can't remember where or id link to it, that under max stated volts/temps from both manufactures the cpu's should last 20 years.

So yes overclocking would reduce that a bit, but not significantly enough to worry about.

Most CPUs only have a useful life for a few years anyway, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're not running crazy temps/volts

not a stupid question but if you think about it how many overclock on this forum ? If it was a big deal and CPU's were dying due to reduce lifespan by overclocking there would be threads about it and the 2nd hand CPU market would be not as good as it is.

Dont worry.
