After causing me no issues whatsoever since I've had it, the trusty Mazda has decided to start being a bit awkward. I can't say I know the first thing about what is going on, but thought I should ask and make sure I'm not going to cause some catastrophic damage when I need the car the most, what with it being year end.

The car wouldn't start earlier this month, changed the battery and all seemed ok, then a few days after it seemed to again almost struggle to start, turning over more than usual before the engine actually came to life. This was worse than normal yesterday, turning over for a noticeably longer period of time before starting, however once it had warmed up, all was ok. Car seemed to start ok this morning, however for the first five minutes or so (until the car was up to temperature) there was a distinct metallic noise, almost a ringing, from the engine at certain speeds - accelerating from about 34 to 45 in 4th gear was when it was clearest.

Any ideas what this may be and if I'm going to cause any major damage if I ignore it till after the new year?

If the noise is apparent at idle the best thing to do initially will be to pop the bonnet and try to figure out where (generally) it's coming from. This will at least give you somewhere to start looking.

A video might help too actually if the noise can be picked up

use a screwdriver and put the pointy end on the engine in places and your ear to the plastic handle, will help pinpoint
