My car's LCD on the dash now say i need to service. its a late 2009 car with millage of 18,000. This is a used car which i bought last year. when i go on Mazda website and their system quoted me with those two prices. Is it this normally expensive?

what does 50000 mile or 4 year service VS. 62500 mile or 5 year service mean? why 2nd option is cheaper?

Thanks guys

Alan :)

I'd advise getting a quote from an independent specialist; the last time I had a Mazda they were about 40 per cent cheaper. They'll be able to tell you what you need, too.

It's out of warranty isn't it? No real need to go with Mazda. Your digital service record won't look as complete though.

If a 4th year service was done in 2013, sure you'd be doing the 5th year one now.

How often has it been serviced in the past? 18'000 in 5 years isn't much at all, only a little more than me tbh.

It could be that it missed it's 4 year/50'000 service which is why it's showing both as this year it should be receiving it's 5 year/62'500 mile service. The reason the 4th year one is more expensive, they do more. Probably includes changing the spark plugs, possibly gearbox oil too.

As for the price, seems pretty reasonable for a dealer. Independents will be cheaper though.

Doesn't matter. Decent independents can update the digital record; using an independent doesn't affect the warranty either these days – provided the service is done to the correct schedule.

I know it doesn't affect the warranty status but it is less hassle.

Didn't know they could update the DSR though. Are those independents much cheaper?

Yes. The last one for my Mazda was some 40 per cent cheaper and updated the DSR. Just as easy to deal with :)

In fact they were a lot better than the dealers in a lot of cases, as it didn't feel like they were taking the mick half the time... Depends on where you're going though.

Wouldn't waste my time with the main dealer when out of warranty.

VW wanted just over 1k to service my car, booked it into a well trusted specialist for just over half the price.

In addition to cost savings i actually trust the specialist will conduct all the work to a high standard, unlike a main dealer.

Oh yeah when Mazda did service our MX5 they fitted the wrong spark plugs... We had a 2.0 and they fitted the ones from a 1.8 so there's no way i'd be going back there!

Just for a bit of balance. I have no problems at all with my local Mazda dealer. Always been spot on service wise.

It is partially because I have a RX8 and don't trust any of the independents nearby with a Wankel Rotary and they can be a bit picky. But when I bought the car I got a discount as it needed a service and I said that I'd take it to be serviced. I took it to Mazda and their attitude and well, service was fantastic so I keep taking it back there. They're also perfectly happy to fit parts that I supply, unlike some dealers, just charging a reasonable amount for labour.

RX8 is also pretty reasonable to service too normally. It's the major service that's kinda expensive.
